The Wine School of Philadelphia November '06 Newsletter
Hello! Hope everyone is well, and able to enjoy this wonderful weather we have
been having. I have quite a few items this month:
two sales; a cool
post-turkey-day class which I will be teaching, and wine buying guide.
Talk to
you soon!-Keith Wallace, Founder & President
Our Very First Wine Event
Sale
Back in 2001, Pete Mitchell was our very first teacher (well, after myself). Most folks don't realize he is still with us, but he has been running all our private
and corporate events for the past three years.
He asked me to say hello to everyone, and give you all
some really cool news: we are having a freaking event sale! Pete wanted to run a lot of events this winter, so he dropped the prices by 20% for you, our newsletter readership
If you want to run a wine event with the school this fall/winter, make sure to email Pete at
pete@vinology.com
or call him at 215-917-6016. Wine Class

You got it, another holiday sale: 25% Off Wine Classes. Use the following
coupon code to get your discount: xraybillets . Not valid for classes already

New Classes
Keith's 101
Cure the Post Thanksgiving Blues! We are hosting our
Wine
101, The Great Experience on November 24th. I will be teaching this
myself (which is a rarity--I haven't taught a 101 class in over two years). Learn Italian Wines & Learn to speak Italian!
Our resident Italian expert Frank Cipparone will be hosting this
Italian
wine tasting with a 101-style language primer. Will be a great class on
November 30th.
The Holiday Dessert Wine & Champagne
Class
The annual event! Make sure you use your
25% discount (see above), okay?
The most highly coveted class every year. It takes us years to collect these
wines, and only a few hours to taste them all. A great wine experience.
See
you on December 29th!
Thanksgiving Food & Wine Pairing Guide

If you read any wine or food publications, you will hear one thing over-and-over
"it's impossible to pick the right wines for Thanksgiving".
This is the
yearly gripe that magazines, newspapers, and your crazy Internet winos truck out
year after year. While it may quite nice to complain about how difficult it is
to pair food & wine, the consumer really should take all the bitching with a
grain of salt.
Really, does that sommelier really stay up at night trying to
figure out how to pair a wine with cranberry sauce? I think not.

Montes 2005 'Alpha' Chardonnay,
Casablanca Valley
Montes is an extraordinarily consistent producer, putting out top-notch wines
every year. This chardonnay is no different, for the right audience. If you love
big creamy chardonnays, just like they used to make in California, then this
puppy is for you.
Vanilla-poached pears & toasted almonds on the palate, a
little jolt of freshness on the finish, and a lingering sensation of smoke.
Quite worthwhile to serve as an aperitif.
$11.99 Code: 28810
Rizzi 2001 Barbaresco Riserva
Way too young, way too good, and way too cheap. The skinny: this wine should
retail for about $50.
The recommendation: buy a case. The problem: undrinkable
for 3 years. Tone-perfect Barbaresco with rose & tar on the nose, with
wild strawberry cloves weaving through the complex finish.
This will prove to be
a beautiful bottle of wine if given time. For those who do not have the storage
facility, I would say pass on this one.
Once this baby is ready to drink, it
will be the perfect complement for grilled venison chops or a wild boar ragu.
$17.99 Code: 24204
Segura Viudas 2001 "Mas D'Aranyo Riserva"
Tempranillo
One of those rare $10 bottles of wine that can deliver some substance along with
style. Ripe currant flavors edge into toasted chocolate and finely textured
tannin support flavors of thyme and tobacco.
That's the substance, but you
still get the round & lush body that has become the signature style for many
Spainish wines over the last few years.
$9.99 Code: 25744
Bodegas Norton 2004 Privada, Mendoza
Sticking your nose into a glass of the '04 Privada is like sticking your face
into the best brunch buffet ever. Bacon, toast with cinnamon, roasted nuts, fig
newtons, chocolate-covered espresso beans, and some more bacon.
I am a very
happy boy right now.
The framework of the Bordeaux-style blend is
full-bodied and tannic. Strongly recommend decanting this little beast before
drinking. Oh, and despite what I said: don't drink this for breakfast. Try beef
stew with roasted pearl onions with this bottle.
