Marigold Kitchen
Wine Dinner
Thursday, June 25th at 7pm
Our BYOB dinners are back! This month, we are taking over the critically beloved Marigold Kitchen!
One of the highest rated restaurants in Philadelphia, the Marigold Kitchen offers one of the most exciting menus in the city: a high-cuisine-meets-southern-cooking style that is undeniably delicious and provoking.
Chef Erin O'Shea will be preparing a special wine-friendly menu for us, so this will be an amazing experience!

The restaurant is housed in a rambling Victorian house near the UPenn campus. For directions & info on the restaurant: Marigold Kitchen.

The Summer Accelerated Program
Classes start August 17th
Summer is here, and the thriving world of wine is waiting for you. Now is the perfect time to uncork your passion. All our Summer programs are offered in an accelerated format, meaning that you can earn your certifications in a single week!
The first step is our critically acclaimed cours a dégustation, The Wine Foundation Program. This course gives the students the techniques and knowledge to become extraordinary wine tasters. Learn to unravel the hidden flavors of wine, and to develop the coveted skill of blind tasting.
The next step is to take your palate on a world tour of wine. In the Global Course in Wine/Intermediate Certificate, the student is exposed to all the major wines and wine regions of the world. A highly detailed program, Global offers our students everything needed to master the global vineyard.
Most of our students take both programs, and they graduate with a level of skill & knowledge that could make Robert Parker blush. For the most ardent of wine students, we also proudly offer the Core Wine Certificate Program, which combines both programs in a single semester and saves the student hundreds of dollars.

Keeping it Fun, Keeping it Tasty
This time of year, it's all too easy to fall into one of two unfortunate camps when it comes to the wines we're drinking right now: Either you gravitate toward over-simple, one-dimensional chillers or, on the other hand, fight that tendency tooth and nail and end up popping the corks on wines that, though perhaps full of merit on their own, do nothing for your unique vinous needs this time of year. Which is why we're endorsing a new school of thought.
So here it is, in all it's revolutionary, paradigm-shifting grandeur: Drink well in the summertime, drink for enjoyment and refreshment, and, above all else, drink what you like. That means steadfastly avoiding any sort of allegiance to one side or another in the Great Summertime Wine Debate, opening the bottles that give you the most pleasure, and, for heaven's sake, don't be told by anyone else what to drink.

Fire up the Grill...
Now that you've dusted the cobwebs and spider webs off your trusty old barbecue, and made that first purchase of hotdogs (natural casings, of course), hamburgers (you went to the butcher and had him grind the meat fresh for you, right?), ribs (purchased from the farmers market and cut from pasture-raised oinkers, we assume), and the rest, it's time to reward yourself with a bottle or two of something tasty, affordable, and outdoor-cooking worthy. Forthwith, some guidance.
Finca de Arantei 2006 Albariño, Rias Baixas
From the sweet-spot of Spain's Albariño production in the northwest of the country comes this crisp, gently melon-y white that will work with anything from softshell crab to simple chicken dishes. And even after all these years, good Albariño is still astoundingly affordable. $19.99. Code: 26723.
Alma de Blanco 2007 Godello, Monterrei
From the still relatively unknown Monterrei D.O. in Spain's northwest comes this Godello, a fruity, surprisingly linear wine that will compliment everything from steamed shrimp and prawns to a big bowl of simple, summery clams. $14.99. Code: 26264.

Verget 2005 Pouilly Fuissé
Verget's wines can sometimes be unjustifiable in the price department, especially this time of year. But this Pouilly Fuissé, from a classic vintage, is beyond easy to both love and justify at $23.99. Not cheap, but worth the outlay for a special summertime occasion. Code: 21810.
Thelema 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch
Though Chenin Blanc--or Steen in local parlance--gets all the glamour, Sauvignon Blanc has really been shining lately in South Africa. This $18.99 effort, from the producers of the wildly delicious "Mint" Cabernet Sauvignon, is all springtime aromas and well-structured backbone. In other words, perfect right now. Code: 28505.

...And Fred Flintstone Those Ribs!
Sure, we like lighter whites as much as anyone, but man (or woman) cannot live on lithe elegance alone. Sometimes, after all, you need a wine as hearty as your food to really complete a meal. Which is why we're recommending these bottlings--their structure, their flavor profile, everything about them seems geared toward making your bbq a little more special.

Cesari 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
We've had very good luck with the 2004 Amarones, and this one is no exception. It's deep, rich fruit and unexpected spiciness scream out for sauce-slathered baby-backs. $44.99. Code: 23874.
Turkey Flat 2005 "Butcher's Block Red," Barossa
This classic Rhone-style blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvedre is custom-made for dry-herb-rubbed lamb chops. Or, frankly, just for sipping on its own. There's a reason Turkey Flat has long been a favorite of The Wine School. $25.99. Code: 27176.

Buil & Giné "Giné Giné," Priorat
We're still talking about that meal more than a year ago at the biker's bar in Priorat: Three hours. Platter after platter of grilled, smoky, iron-rich meat. And wine like this, with minerality, structure, and, surprisingly, something almost pretty hovering in the background. $16.99. Code: 26200.
Ermitage du Pic St.-Loup 2005, Coteaux du Languedoc
Step 1: Fry up some good bacon. Step 2: Grill up a burger and a sliced onion. Step 3: Open this wine and guzzle alongside dinner. C'est magnifique. $16.99. Code: 19028.
