  It wasn't that long ago that a newly minted consulting firm was referred to me for a marketing and launch strategy. We spoke via skype for about 75 minutes and then I followed up via email. 
I asked, How are things going? 
He answered, You left me battered and bruised after our last call, but after I got over the pain, I got to work... 
=) 
Battered and bruised?  Well, THAT was certainly not my intent. Honesty?  yes. Harsh Reality?  Definitely.  Wounded egos in favor of inflated bank accounts?  When necessary. 
Another quick story:  A client had a book ghost written. He asked me what I thought.  My response:  It makes you sound like a tool.  Fortunately for me, he agreed. =) 
It hit me the other day that THIS is what really sets me apart.  My willingness to put (the often ugly and harsh) reality in front of my clients... so we can USE THAT REALITY to make more money.
But, what sets YOU apart from any and all competitors?  I'd love for you to take today to get really really clear about what makes YOU unique! Because ONLY THEN can you position yourself optimally in front of your target market.  
Maybe your product or service works FASTER than others... Maybe you have a slower, gentler technique.  Maybe you're BIGGER and can offer more, or maybe you're SMALLER and can offer better service. Failure is -- as a topic -- as unsexy and unattractive as topics come. But, make no mistake, the question ISN'T What do I do IF I fail?  It's What do I do WHEN I fail? 
Recently I sent a very heartfelt email to a friend who felt like he was failing. Here's a part of that email:  

I fail every single day -- at something.  Not every other day, but every day.  I fail as a wife and a mother and a business owner and as a boss. I fail as a partner and as a room mom and as a housekeeper.  And I fail at losing weight.  Many days, I fail at several of these things simultaneously. =) 


I hate failure, but anyone who's up to ANYTHING becomes accustomed to it -- WE MUST.  Here's my solution -- I make sure my FASCINATION with what I'm pursuing gets more of my mindspace than the FEAR that I'm going to FAIL.  


Besides, I step on failure.... I've risen to six figures and beyond.. I've risen in the mind of my market... and the ugly dirty truth is... it's because I've decided to LAY DOWN each and every failure and stand ON TOP OF IT.  THAT is how you RISE.  
What do you do with FAILURE?  You step on it. With both feet.  And you enjoy the new height it gives you.  But you also LEARN from it. 
I was recently reading an article by Lee Milteer that said, Not everything you do will be successful, but all actions do leave you with results and knowledge of what works and what doesn't work. That knowledge will always serve you. 
So, it's not sexy or popular, but OWN failure.  Fail BRILLIANTLY.  Because the degree of which you're willing to RISK failure is the -- in my opinion -- the degree in which you're ABLE to succeed.

I went to college about five hours away from my house... and even after a long drive, as soon as I could, I'd get on the back roads leading home.
This extended my time on the road, but these back roads held a lot of memories for me.  It's where I learned to drive.  It's where my brother and I worked together to get the windshield wipers working on the way to school. =)  Little known dirt roads were where I would go with friends...  to do whatever it was we weren't allowed to do at home! lol... 
In short, these roads were welcoming me back home.   I knew them and they knew me. (I still take the back roads whenever I can... which my husband STILL doesn't understand!) 
My point is this:  HOW do you welcome your ideal clients?  How do THEY know they're home with you?  That's what today's blog is about... KNOWING your target market, attracting them, creating a HOME for them under YOUR umbrella, and -- even -- being willing to REPEL those who DON'T belong in an effort to create a more welcoming space for those who do. List size.  I don't often share the size of my list with people.  WHY?  Because it's entirely unimpressive. TRUTH BE TOLD, compared to my income, I  have a very, very (maybe even embarrassingly) small list. 


I want to share a few things with you today, that -- frankly -- I'd never put on my blog... or on facebook... with my entire email list.... or anywhere else for that matter. 


First, do you want a small list? NO. Of course not. KEEP working to generate subscribers and followers and a TRIBE that responds to you.  


But here's the truth:  You can make BIG money with a small list, and the more revealing truth is this:  THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WITH HUMONGOUS LISTS WHO AREN'T MAKING MONEY FROM THEM. 


I've talked to them.  I've worked with them.  I've mentored them. These are people who -- if they extracted even ONE DOLLAR from each person on their list, they'd be making a very impressive income.  But, they're not.  If they're selling anything, it might be a book or some low-priced tele-class.  So, their LIST has not been monetized. Not properly. 


What I've learned is that if you can't make money with a small list, you probably can't make money with a large list either.


A small list properly activated and monetized can OUT-EARN a large list without these pricing, packaging and positioning secrets ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.  


Other gurus will lie to you.  They'll say that magical things happen when you hit 1000 subscribers.  I can tell you, this is false hope.  They'll tell you to WAIT until you hit a certain number of followers until you schedule a high priced retreat or product launch.  They don't know what they're talking about... or maybe they just don't want you to compete with them. I launched, marketed and FILLED my first 3-day retreat with a list size of...... 313.  Yup.  That's the truth.


And it's a beautiful truth.  Because RIGHT NOW, you can stop all of your entirely unprofitable efforts to get your name out there! and start focusing on ACTIVATING and MONETIZING the list you have. Make money from YOUR CURRENT LIST... by packaging what your list DESPERATELY wants at the RIGHT (Note I'm DEFINITELY not saying CHEAPEST) price point. 


I'm taking THIS SUPER-NARROW SUBJECT and creating a one-day (+one month) event that could best be described as an inch-wide and a mile deep in scope.  We're dealing with PRICE, PACKAGING and PROMOTION of what you sell. We'll focus extensively on your POSITIONING within your market.  (Do they think you're their PEER?  If so, you've got some long, lean months ahead of you!) And we'll extract PROFIT from even the SMALLEST of lists. 


It's an event like no other.  I've never offered it before, and neither has anyone else. And I can confidently say that it IS EXACTLY what you're looking for.

Psst... it’s me.  


Your business.  NO -- not the one you’re running now.... 


...the one you dreamt of, invested in, got all excited about -- BACK THEN, remember? --  before the “realities of business” (That’s how you put it, right?)  hit you.  


You know... the cheap clients, the “ideal” clients who KNOW they want to hire you, but “can’t afford it right now,” the people who balk at your prices while asking for the world on a silver platter... 


The nights of wondering if I’ll ever make (big) money for you or not... the frustration of being SO COMMITTED to helping people but -- um... -- you’ve gotta pay the bills, too...  The insanity of looking at all you’re doing and wondering what in the world you’d have to do in order to see some major ($$$) increase in this little venture of ours...    


Well, it’s been a while since we’ve spent any REAL time together... plotting and planning, dreaming and scheming together... so I asked Michelle if I could send you a quick little note. 


Because that DREAM business (ME) you started out to build -- the one that would make you MONEY and give you some TIME freedom -- is still here.  I’ve been distant, maybe... and I know you’re busy.  But, I really miss what we had.  That passion and excitement and HOPE for all we could do together... all those we could help.  


And, I know we’ve been in a bit of a rut lately.... but, well -- I hope you don’t mind -- I went ahead and asked Michelle if I could be the one to introduce you to something that I believe is EXACTLY what will make THE difference.  Seriously, I think it would work for us.  


It’s her new program, “Thriving in a GROUPON Culture” and it’s the antithesis of what you’ve been reading and learning at those other conferences you’ve been attending. I'm so in love with and in awe of my Rapid Results and coaching gym members... because each week, they show up with courage and candor and a daring sense of determination.  Still, there are times when I get some raw honesty... when they admit to wondering, 


Am I ever gonna make it?
Is this really going to work?
Am I chasing a pipe dream, or what? 


This is NOT because they're not successful.  In fact, the day I learned that my own marketing mentor had to sell himself on himself every day, I did a happy dance. 


I mean, if this self-made multi- multi- millionaire had to sell himself on his success every day.... dissing the demons of doubt and second-guessing... who am I NOT to have moments like this?  Who are you?  


Here're some things I've learned along the way about these moments when you're looking in the mirror and BATTLING self-doubt. 


1) Having these feelings is NOT an indicator of your impending doom, so don't give them that much credit! Usually, it means that you're out of your comfort zone... exactly where success is created. 


2) Having these thoughts or feelings does NOT mean you need to change course or pull back.  Businesses' high failure rate is largely due -- in my humble opinion -- to us giving too much credence to emotions and not enough to numbers. Don't make an emotional decision, if you can help it.  


3) Your business is not like a cake... where it either turns out or doesn't. Many times, the END goals you set for yourself just usher in bigger and more challenging goals... so it's really a course in development.  So, CHART YOUR COURSE, CARVE YOUR OWN PATH, but then... be flexible...and GROW with the FLOW.  =)

Happy Wednesday!  I'm overwhelmed, humbled, excited, and HONORED by the women (and a few brave men) joining us here on Planet WOW!  We're gaining new members at a speed I'd previously only wished for... and I have to believe it's because it's OBVIOUS that HERE -- we do business a bit differently.
