Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

Terminology…words do not always mean what you think they do. "Assistant manager," is a good example. What do you think it means? Chances are good that it is not what the person hiring you thinks it means. (Or, if you are the business owner, not what your job applicants think.)

At a campground, "assistant manager" often means to be a helper in the office or someone who does cleaning and yard work.

Some campground owners believe -- perhaps correctly -- that giving workers a more prestigious job title is some form of compensation. Your job is to clean the bathrooms every day, and to fill in at the office when the owner needs to leave the park. It certainly sounds more prestigious to tell the folks back home that you are assistant manager than to say you scrub toilets every day. The title may also carry some clout when you are looking for your next position and it requires that you have previous campground management experience.

Job titles mean different things in different industries. Be sure that when you respond to a job posting seeking an assistant manager that you inquire as to what that really means. If you go in thinking that as assistant manager you will be making managerial decisions, be involved with hiring and firing staff, etc., but then find you are supposed to be cleaning the bathrooms and picking up trash, chances are you will be unhappy in the position.

There is nothing wrong with being a janitor, a maid, a housekeeper, or a trash collector. In fact, those can be some of the best paying jobs at campgrounds.

Just know what the job really entails. Don't assume the duties are what you imagine the title means.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

A blog or website is yet another way to earn a living without being tied to one location. Your blog can be about most anything. Picking a topic that you enjoy can make it seem more like fun than work. Still, you have to figure out a way to make money with it. SoloBuiltIt! (SBI!) is an all-in-one program that guides you from picking a profitable website topic, to building the actual site, to keeping up with ever-changing technology. Yes, we use SIB! for our Workers On Wheels website.

Caretaking with Pets: Animals May Be Welcome, But Don't Assume So

Caretaking with pets is possible, but don't take for granted that your animals are included in the caretaker offer. Some ads specify dogs and horses are welcome. An RV can help in other instances.

Working RVer Tip

Your time as a volunteer can count as legitimate job experience. When listing your job experiences on your resume, they don't need to come from paid positions. Document your tasks and duties along with your responsibilities and accomplishments. You also need to keep track of the dates of the volunteer positions and names of your supervisors.

Working RVer Tip

You don't drive thousands of miles to get to a campground job in Alaska to work for an RV site. You go to Alaska because that is where you want to go, and then you work at a campground after you are there. Likewise with other far-away destinations.
