Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

What do these people have in common? A yodeler. A blacksmith. The Tupperware lady. A parking lot attendant. Someone selling wine. A magician. A watercolor artist. A toy train collector. A sound technician. Someone making funnel cakes. A jewelry maker. A masseuse. An author. A photographer. The bartender. A woman selling time shares at a fancy resort. A guy sharpening knives. The caricature artist. An implement salesman. A wood carver. Someone who turns digital photographs into DVDs. A woman who makes soap. The trolley car operator. The medicine man. Security officers.

All those listed above are people who work antique machinery shows. I could go on and on, as that is just a good start. People working these shows perform all sorts of services and sell all sorts of things. Some are professionals. Others are hobbyists. Some do only one show a year. Others work a circuit that includes fairs and other venues, so they are working year round. But, every one of them has found a way to ply their trade at these old time farm and harvest events.

Bob and I have been busy interviewing and taking pictures. Some of these folks have fascinating stories about how they got into the line of work they do and why they love it. Other working RVers don't have a fun or glamorous tale to tell -- they have simply found a means to support their families. In general, those we talked with enjoyed the work they do.

We will probably go to a few more of these shows as we work our way south for the winter. We don't have specific plans, but we are thinking we may end up in Georgia or Florida for a good chunk of the winter.

Which brings me to another topic….

Campground and RV resort owners, do you want to impress us with your park? I think Bob and I are going to head southeast for the fall and winter. We prefer to stay at parks that belong to those who subscribe to our newsletters and advertise with us. If you want to show off your park, if you want us to experience firsthand how nice it is, so we can tell others about it, contact me.

RV parks in southern Texas were not all destroyed by hurricane Harvey. In fact, we have a new ad from a resort in Rockport. They are hiring.

And, we have a special for you from Galveston Island RV Resort. Stay at Galveston Island RV Resort anytime between now and the end of October, and they will give you a free souvenir t-shirt and free electricity -- but you must ask for the "WOW Special" or tell them Coleen from Workers On Wheels sent you. We spent a month at the resort last spring -- it was immaculate, with large spaces. I've heard they have a shrimp boil coming up towards the end of this month. Here's a link to the review we wrote about the resort. Phone: (409) 200-2745.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

JR Watkins - A Location Independent Business for RVers

Bob and I have been selling JR Watkins products since 2005. People love the vanilla, cinnamon, and pepper, the old time remedies, and the natural skin care products - and that makes it easy to sell. The business is extremely flexible. You do as much or as little as you want. No minimum orders. They'll drop-ship the products for you. Work the business wherever your RV travels take you -- USA or Canada. See the product catalog and learn more.

Teddy the Gold Mining RVer

Teddy is a snowbird who makes his living mining gold. He worked several southwestern states during the winter. In spring, he worked the Pacific Northwest. Come summer, he is in Alaska.

When I saw him, he was driving a new pickup. He told me the gold paid for it.

We didn't get to visit long, so I didn't get a full interview. I don't know if he panned, used a portable dredge, or some other mining method.

Teddy is not a young man. I wouldn't describe him as the picture of health and fitness. Yet mining, and being in the great outdoors, is what works for him.

Working RVer Tip -- Work for RVers Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Is gold mining right for everyone? Of course not. Just like sitting at a desk, working on a computer isn't for everyone. Campground work is not right for all RVers, either. Nor is dealing with tourists every day a good fit for some. Nor is working as a travel nurse, a pipeline welder, or a program trouble-shooter. But, all of these things are right for some working RVers.

Temporary Staffing Agencies: Short-term Placement and Temp Jobs for RVers

There's a very important segment of businesses that hire working RVers that doesn't get mentioned often enough: temporary staffing agencies. If you want to be mobile, need to get paid, and don't want (or can't) make a long term commitment, temp services could be the perfect solution for you. We have several articles on the Workers On Wheels website about working for a temp service.

Working RVer Tip -- Beware Of Time Zone Differences

Check the time zones before making phone calls. If you are on the east coast and call an employer on the west coast, at 10:00 a.m. your time, it is only 7:00 a.m. his time. And, if you are in a western state and make an evening call at 9:00 pm your time, you are calling the employer who lives in an eastern state at midnight!

Working RVer Tip -- Speak with the Boss

If you are unhappy with your campground work situation, talk to the owner or manager about it. Discussing it with other staff isn't likely to help. Sharing your frustrations with other campers won't help and will probably cause you more grief. The way to improve things is to politely and calmly talk with your supervisor. It may also be that together you decide it would be best to cut your stay short.
