Update from Your RV Workers On Wheels Newsletter Editor

Ask questions before accepting a position. An RVer who wishes to remain anonymous writes, "We should have asked more questions up front - instead of learning later that the wife's job was spending the majority of the time standing in a chuck wagon for six hours and the husband cleaning the restrooms and maintenance/mowing, etc. Since I hate to cook for other people, working six hours cooking hamburgers and burritos is awful. We have learned to ask up front what is required and be sure it's what we want to do for an entire summer."

Learn from her experience. Ask questions. There is no such thing as "typical camp host duties." (Although some use the phrase to mean, "scrubbing toilets and cleaning bathrooms.")

Bob and I are in Iowa. We're taking in some antique farm equipment shows. We also went to the Iowa State Fair. We've been surrounded by working RVers, as these events offer so many opportunities.

Wherever you are in your work and travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,

Coleen

Working RVer Tip -- Speak Up

Campground owners are not mind readers. They don't know what you can do, like to do, are or are not willing to do, or prefer not to do unless you show or tell them. This doesn't mean that you will always get to do what you want or that you won't need to do tasks you don't like. However, if you let your supervisors know your preferences, they may be able to assign you more of the kinds of jobs you'd like to do.

Working RVer Tip -- Vent Appropriately

When a job isn't going the way you'd like, it can help to vent. Your supervisor probably isn't the best person to unload on. A customer is certainly not the one to discuss the problem with, which means if you are working at a campground, do not vent to other campers staying there. And, most definitely, don't air your grievances on Facebook or other social media. Instead, find a mentor, job coach, or trusted friend who will listen without blabbing.

Working RVer Tip -- Pat Formulas for Compensation Don't Work

Expect compensation to match job requirements. A casual job where you spend much of your time just being there to greet campers likely requires more hours for a site than does one where you are providing hard, physical labor. Expect a job that most anyone can do to require more hours for a site than one that requires special skills, training, or certification. The pat formulas that say you should work a certain number of hours per week in exchange for your RV site do not take this into consideration. Instead of using a formula that may be irrelevant to you and your situation, logically access the job requirements and what you consider fair compensation.

Something to Think About

You don't need to know how you're going to get there as much as you need to know that you will get there. ~ Hilton Johnson

A lot of trouble will disappear if everyone learns to talk with each other instead of about each other. ~ Author Unknown
