The Super
Bowl, with its accompanying commercials, are over and Valentine's day is almost
here. As wellness business owners and practitioners many of you are in the
middle of the first quarter of the business year. It's a time to review the
records, complete the bookkeeping and prepare for quarterly tax reporting, if
required, and filing federal taxes. Filing taxes can be daunting and cause
feelings of stress for many business owners.

As a practitioner it's a perfect time to offer special
promotions and convenient hours to tax preparers, accountants, tax lawyers and
business owners. If you are not prepared to offer services this quarter then
prepare for the next quarter, learn from the experience and repeat the cycle to
evaluate the benefits for your clients, your business and yourself

Health,
wellness and happiness are very interrelated. As the number of women who own
and operate businesses increases daily, so does the need for their self-care.
Women are not only responsible for the health of their business; they might
also be care givers for a parent or parents, children and/ or another family
member. Self-care is one of the most important components of a wellness program
for business owners and non-business owners.

Self-care habits can include a daily walk, pausing,
deep breathing, meditation, yoga, frequent breaks from looking at the computer
monitor, drinking an adequate amount of water, listening to music, spending
time with children. You get the idea. It's not about buying and owning things
but taking responsibility for your health, wellness and well-being. It includes,
but is not limited to, movement (exercise), nutrition (eating), playing,
working (business) and finding meaning and peace in the midst of chaos. Sounds
like energy? (Continue reading)

October is here and the holiday season is starting with Halloween and cooler weather. It has been un-seasonally warm on the East Coast. The trees are still green and the late summer and fall plants are in full bloom. Usually, prior to Thanksgiving I gather beautiful fall colored leaves from the cherry blossom trees to freeze and use for table decorations for Thanksgiving. Looks like gathering leaves will occur a little later this year.
With the cold, fall weather starting later this year, the allergy season is longer than usual. The article in this issue will address the allergy season.

Here at Lifestyle Wellness Enterprise, the Wellness Community has grown and I had the pleasure of visiting Mission Hospital in Ashville, NC. The hospital has a very comprehensive Integrative Care Department and offers continuing education programs to integrative care practitioners. I highly recommend their educational services.

If you've
been wondering what is causing your nose to run during the months of October

                                 Greetings
The wellness business is rewarding and challenging. We are coming to the end of the first quarter of 2011 which brings with it the task of filing your personal and business taxes. On the other hand it's a great time to assess your initial goals for 2011 to see what is working or not working and what need to be adjusted, discarded or put on hold for another time. An example of adjustment, going back to the drawing board, is the defeat of legislation in Colorado for the licensure of naturopathy. What assessments are you making at this time?
The major goal here, at Lifestyle Wellness (LW) is to be of service and support you on your individual and business journey toward optimal wellness. The major focus for LW this year is heart health, weight management, stress and pain reduction. All of these areas are interrelated and impact overall wellness status of women and men. Our bodies are a whole unit and as such, a holistic approach is the way to go. Another reason I employ integrative wellness strategies and co-active wellness coaching. To address your needs send me your suggestions for discussion topics and comment on the Facebook page

The Facebook fan page is now Lifestyle Wellness Business and can be found at http://www.facebook.com/LifestyleWellnessCoach. The complementary give-a-ways will be announced on the fan page so make sure you are a fan. We look forward to seeing you in the Facebook * fan page* community!

Touch for Self Help Healing

Jin Shin Jyutsu, translated as the Art of the Creator Through
Compassionate Man, is an ancient form of energy therapy that originated
from Japan. It is based on the theory that there is life energy
circulating throughout the universe and moves through each living
organism and through the body, following a predefined pathway. Along
this energy pathway are 26 safety energy locks acting as circuit
breakers, which will shut down when the body is overstressed, abused or
tensed. Thereby, causing blockages along the energy pathways and
restricting the flow of energy.
To restore the natural flow of energy and release the safety energy
locks, our hands are used as jumper cables. The Jin Shin Jyutsu
practitioner places their hands on the site of the appropriate safety
energy lock, similar to how one might use jumper cables to recharge a
worn down car battery. It does not involve massage, manipulation of
muscles, or the use of drugs or substances. You can learn touch methods from a practitioner and use the self-help treatments to help balance your mind, body and spirit.
During a session with a certified practitioner, the client reports a
deep sense of relaxation or energy. A session can focus on helping a
particular issue or project that the client presents with or for
relaxation or energizing. Jin Shin Jyutsu is very much a part of
integrative and complementary therapy. It supports health promotion and
wellness and the body's innate ability to heal itself.

Greetings
December is here and the holiday season is in full swing with happiness, snow flakes, decorations and the smell of delicious food cooking! Usually, prior to Thanksgiving I would gather beautiful fall colored leaves from the cherry blossom trees to freeze and use for table decorations for Thanksgiving. This year that didn't occur. It was alright because I can now report I completed my clinical for auricular acupuncture! It was a very, very pleasant, relaxing experience--I received a treatment everyday!

NewsBasically, the recommendations for the person who is not deficient in Vitamin D has not changed from the amount prescribed by me when I had a full practice. However, the recommendations of the IOM (Institute of Medicine) was based on bone health. The committee did not consider the studies that reported the positive benefits of increased dosages of vitamin D for other health related conditions. I will be writing more on this topic soon.
 Notes

Foods that reduce acid reflux.

Bananas
Couscous, rice
Parsley, celery (root and green veggies), cauliflower, broccoli, green beans
Sea-foods such as shrimp, lobster and other shellfish, wild salmon
Chicken and turkey without skin
Remember to bake, broil or roast. Fried foods increase acid reflux as does caffeine.

The hours of daylight have gotten shorter and apples and fall berries are falling from trees in my neighborhood. This month also brings us to the beginning of the last four months of this year. It's a great time to review the objectives and goals that were made and determine if you are still on point in implementing and achieving those goals and what changes may be needed. Minor lifestyle and business changes may make, the last few months less stress-full, you feel in harmony with the universe and you receive more rewards on both levels.

Here at Lifestyle Wellness Enterprise, the Wellness Community is beginning to grow and taking on a new life of its own. Women's Wellness 4u is also undergoing some changes. We will keep you up to date over the coming weeks and we look forward to seeing you in the community!

ONE CHANGE AT A TIME
Have you reached the stage where you accept the fact that in order to have a lifetime of weight management you have to make some lifestyle changes? Undoubtedly, you are ready to start one change at a time. If you try to make changes too quickly, you can easily become frustrated and start to feel deprived. Coaching for wellness involves change. The change begins after the coaching session as that's when the planned action steps start.
Changes need to occur over a period of time and at a pace that is comfortable for you. If your plan causes you to feel deprived you might be subject to binge eating or overeating.
So what are some of the areas in which you can consider changing? First, think thin. Your first action could be to learn how to use portion control and still feel satisfied at the end of the meal. Next, consider the time of day you eat. Do you start your day with breakfast? Do you find yourself eating on the run or do you sit down to enjoy what you eat? Are you eating close to your bedtime? These are all areas that you can make changes and, over time, aid your healthy weight management program.
The journey for change should be enjoyable and not one that you find yourself constantly stressing over. Remember the change should be at a pace that doesn't overwhelm you. If you find yourself on the yo-yo cycle, one week eating healthy and the next week eating a whole pizza and/or a pint of decadent triple chocolate ice cream, it's a signal to re-evaluate your strategies and/or goals. Reconfirm with yourself what your goals are and the steps required in order to reach your goal for positive changes you desire. Ask yourself, why and what are you trying to achieve?
Often, this process of reevaluating will help you realize that you have set realistic and achievable goals. More importantly, your goals can be achieved with one change at a time! One small step at a time, the kaizen way!

Eat breakfast first- before you open one email!
Eat all meals - snacking is not an option. It's too easy to snack and to snack while at the computer, based on not allowing time to eat breakfast.
Sit to eat all meals-no standing. Allow enough time to eat unhurried.
Eat early evening. Eating before 8PM (four hours before bedtime is best) is better for digestion

Starting Your Health Journey with SMART Goals by Jim Persing

There is a statement that there is no point in giving something up unless you get something back that is even better--and quickly! For many of us, that is how we look at our health. In terms of making healthy changes and sustaining them, the changes made usually need to be joyful and fun, and ones that allow for us to feel better. Where are you on the scale of making changes and what have you done to start the change process, either in a big way or a small way? Small changes over time can add up to big benefits, but when you make large changes at once and are able to sustain those, you will notice even more success. Once you make and keep those changes in place, you will be aware of the new way you feel and start to enjoy the benefits of being healthy.
So, where do you start? The first step to making changes is to establish what you want to achieve and set a goal that defines that. Be specific with what you want to achieve, as that will allow you to have a much greater chance of success in getting and staying there. As an example, coming up with a goal of I want to lose some weight may sound good, but it is not specific enough to really permit you to follow through on it. How much weight will you lose? When will you lose it? What will you do to get there? None of those questions are addressed in this over-simple statement, and if you adopt this as your goal statement, you are likely to fall short. Instead, setting a goal that is based on SMART principles will give you a much greater chance of success.

What are SMART principles? That is simply an acronym for five tips on how to set a goal. In order, they are S-Specific. Be specific about what you want to achieve. If you don't know your target, you will likely not hit it. Set a weight goal that is specific and that you will recognize when you get there-I will lose ten pounds. M-Measurable simply means that the goal can be measured. Losing ten pounds is easy to measure by using a scale, just like being able to run one mile can be measured by distance. A goal like I want to feel better cannot be measured accurately and is not as helpful as it could be. A-Attainable is the indication that you can reach the goal. Losing ten pounds is attainable and something that you can measure and reach in short order with the right support and coaching. Losing 150 pounds in a few months or deciding today to run a marathon in two weeks with no training or experience are not attainable goals.
Additionally, R-Realistic means that the goal is relevant and realistic for you. You have to set the goal and do not rely upon others to tell you what to do or what is right for you. With your coach and allies, come up with a goal that means something to you and that you can achieve. Finally, T-Time bound means that the goal has a time aspect. I will lose ten pounds and I will lose ten pounds in 90 days have different meanings. When you avoid a time schedule, you are likely setting yourself up to miss the mark completely and be disappointed. You can always make adjustments along the way if you need to, but make sure you have a time connected to your goal. These are just a few ideas on goal setting--now get out there and start to work!

A variety of fresh vegetables are coming to neighborhood supermarkets and farmers markets. When I go to the supermarket my first stop is the produce market. It doesn't make a difference if I'm at the supermarket or the farmer's green market, I buy too much because it is so appealing to the eyes. I can spend a half day in Fairway Market!
I'm making a commitment to myself to buy less, cook less and throw away less!

The Equinox and Solstice are related.

The Equinox and the Solstice
Winter has ended and spring is here. The official first day of spring was March 20, 2010, Spring Equinox. The word Equinox comes from Latin and means equal night. The Spring Equinox is often called the vernal equinox. The word vernal means of spring. On the Spring Equinox the sun rises exactly in the East, travels through the sky for 12 hours and sets exactly in the West. The motion of the sun through the sky is exactly the same for everyone on earth. On the Spring and Fall Equinox, every place on earth experience a 12 hour day twice a year. On March 20th the Spring Equinox, which occurs yearly between 3/19 and 3/21, the amount of sunlight and the amount of darkness are exactly equal. The equinox is also a time of celebration for many people. It can be a time for cleansing, renewal and purification from the winter and of welcoming the spring with greater wisdom, clarification and energy. An expression of gratitude and thanks is also given for the good things in life and not concentrating on your needs and wants. Spring brings with it a lifting of depression and a relief from seasonal affective disorder syndrome or SADS. Your circadian rhythm feels more in tune with the universal energy and you wake up without an alarm. Summer Solstice is June 21, 2010 at 7:28 AM EDT. The solstice and the equinox are related in the sense that they are both seasonal. How will it affect your health or feeling of well-being? You start to feel more energetic, renewed, and eat fewer carbohydrate filled or high fat comfort foods. Energy is obtained from the sun and the earth. Earth's energy is derived from walking on dirt and sand of the earth. Then you store the earth's energy, solar energy and vitamin D in the body. Hence, that 'good feeling'.
During the summer months you spend more time outdoors in the daylight and sun. While spring is the season for allergies to appear, summer is known for suntans, sunburns , sun blocking oils and lotions. Quercetin and citrus bioflavonoids will help support your respiratory health against allergies and promote a healthy immune system. The earth's energy will energize and renew your sense of wellbeing.
