Holiday Recipe:
Almond Nog

This is one of my FAVORITE yummy, festive drinks. And it's healthy too. Almonds are tasty tidbits that provide a nutritional punch!

First you'll need to soak 1 cup of raw almonds overnight.  Here's how: place raw almonds in a bowl or jar and cover with water. (Do not use salted or roasted almonds.) Place in fridge for 8-10 hours. Rinse well and drain off water. When you soak almonds you are actually sprouting them and making them more nutritionally ALIVE. Plus, they're tastier and easier to digest this way! Once your almonds are soaked, then you're ready to make this delicious, nutritious holiday drink.

Almond Nog
1 cup soaked raw almonds (as described above)
3 cups water (or less, depending on desired thickness)
2 ripe bananas (Use frozen bananas* if you prefer a creamier drink.)
2 Tbs. raw honey (or 3 large, soft, pitted dates; if dates are hard, then soak in water for 1/2 hr)
1 tsp. vanilla (or 1/3 of a vanilla bean)
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

  1. Blend soaked almonds and water until pureed.
  2. Strain almond milk to remove pulp using either a strainer, cheesecloth or a nut bag.
  3. Squeeze out as much almond milk as possible. (Save the pulp in your fridge. It can be used to add fiber to your diet, such as adding it to fruit smoothies, oatmeal, cereal or even cookies.)
  4. Pour strained almond milk back into blender, add bananas, raw honey or dates, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
  5. Blend completely. Serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon on top. Makes two glasses.

* Freeze bananas without the peeling. If your blender is not very powerful then slice your bananas into a few smaller pieces before freezing them.

Almonds are high in fiber and protein. They are also rich in Vitamin E, magnesium, calcium, potassium and will aid in lowering cholesterol and protecting against heart disease.

Inspirational Story: Unknown Strength
A girl and her mother were walking along a road when they came across a large stone. The girl said to her mother, "Do you think if I use all my strength, I can move this rock?" Her mother answered, "If you use all your strength, I am sure you can do it." The girl began to push the rock. Exerting herself as much as she could, she pushed and pushed. The rock did not move. Discouraged, she said to her mother, "You were wrong. I can't do it." Her mother placed her arm around her daughter's shoulder and said, "No, daughter. You didn't use all your strength. You didn't ask me to help you." ~Author Unknown
