Jeanette's Message
Summer's here. Yay! I was driving into
San Rafael for class yesterday morning, crossing the Richmond bridge,
and it was so beautiful outside that I exited at the lookout point right
off of Highway 580 to enjoy the amazing scenic bay view. There were
birds frolicking about, and the sun was glistening and dancing on the
water. I sat their for about 10 minutes just taking it all in. It was so
nurturing and peaceful.
I'm still feeling the positive effects of that spontaneous meditative time from yesterday morning. Truly, a little bit can go a long way when we stop to appreciate the beauty that is all around us. Take time for yourself throughout the summer to feel the healing, warm embrace of the sun.
In honor of those who give (and have given) us affection, support and protection through the years: Happy Father's Day! Dads and fatherly caretakers, thanks for shining forth the strong presence of your fathering spirit. Your loving gifts are blessings to us all.
Health and Happiness,
Jeanette

Healthy Snack: Roasted Chickpeas
makes 1 1/4 cup
Next time you're craving a snack, try out this healthy one instead of chips. Chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) have no saturated fat or cholesterol and they're high in fiber, protein, copper, folate and manganese. So good!
Ingredients
One 15 oz. can chickpeas, well drained (cook from scratch if you prefer, but the canned chickpeas work well without the effort.)
Two Tablespoons of Olive Oil
One teaspoon smoked or sweet paprika (or spice of choice such as chili powder or cayenne pepper)
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2. Place chickpeas in a roasting pan or oven proof dish, drizzle with olive oil and bake for 10 minutes.
3. Stir the chickpeas and sprinkle them with the paprika. Bake for another few minutes until the chickpeas are golden and crisp on the outside. (I cook mine for 10 more minutes. I guess it depends on the oven.)
4. Optional: add dash of salt and pepper. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Thank you Jules Clancy for this tasty snack recipe.
Stressful Circumstances and Free Legal Aid for Seniors
Recently one of my class members, Shirley, shared with me that her husband had passed away in early spring. In addition to the stress of dealing with her loss, she was having to deal with loads of unexpected paper work. Her husband's employer was wrongfully claiming that she was not entitled to her husband's pension. As if that wasn't enough, she was also involved in troublesome communications with their insurance company.
She did her best to turn things around, but she was left feeling helpless to the "powers that be." The financial support that she needed to survive and that was rightfully hers was being withheld. It seemed that they were not going to cooperate with her at this most difficult and vulnerable time in her life. How inappropriate it all was. My heart went out to her. Read More>
The "Dirty Dozen" & "Clean 15"
Because the harmful effects of pesticides are worrisome, not well understood, or in some cases completely unstudied, it's wise for us to limit exposure to pesticides whenever possible. Although washing fresh produce can reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but important nutrients often get thrown away with the peel. The best choice is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and select organic when possible to lower exposure to potentially toxic chemicals.
Since many of us can't always buy organic then it helps to know what conventional foods are safer choices. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) conducted a study to see which fruits and vegetables had the highest and lowest levels of pesticides. The
EWG's computer analysis found that we can cut our pesticide exposure by
almost 90% by avoiding the most contaminated conventional fruits and veggies and
eating the least contaminated instead. Here's what they found: Read More>

FYI
Taken from an email that was recently forwarded to me by one of my class members:
"On Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women: thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms.
