Jeanette's Message
Did you have an enjoyable Halloween?  I sure did. This one goes down in the history books for me. The participants of my Fit and Fun class at the Margaret Todd Senior Center (you all know who you are!) played a heart stopping "trick" on me that I'll never forget. These mischievous ones plotted together and decided they would all simultaneously fall down on the floor right in the middle of one of our aerobics routines recently.

After I recovered from the shock and could see that everyone was okay, I laughed so hard that my eyes watered. I couldn't believe that they did that! The good news is that they were all able to get back up again, a testament to their long term commitment to exercise! It was a joy to see them acting like kids, and living up to their name: Youthful Hearts. :-)

I love that Halloween brings out the creative, playful spirit in so many! In this photo, I am with some of my other favorite youthful hearts: my little friends Elizabeth, age 13 and Imelda, 7. They had never celebrated Halloween before so I brought them to a local carnival where they went trick or treating for the first time. Playing with them is one of my most enjoyable treats, as well as leading my exercise classes!

Many of you have shared photos and stories with me about your beautiful grandchildren and about how lucky you are to have them in your life. Spending time with children is a win/win for all of us! They benefit from our loving, encouraging support, and we benefit from their love and enthusiastic wonder of life.

With more holidays approaching, let's look for the good and beauty all around us and acknowledge our many blessings. You are most definitely one of mine!

Happy Holidays,

Jeanette

Strength Training: The Older We Get The More Important It Is To Do
As we grow older, we expect certain changes to occur. We may notice that we have less energy, gain weight, and are not as strong as we used to be. Aging may contribute to these symptoms however inactivity is the major cause--and that's something that we can address. Strength training is the most crucial step we can take to slow down our aging.  If we don't engage in a strength training program on a regular basis then we'll lose 40-50% of our muscle mass and 50% of our muscle strength by age 65 and, sadly, even more by age 80.

When this happens, we can become so debilitated that we'll depend on others to help us with simple daily activities. When you have enough muscle, you can get up from a chair by yourself. When you don't-you have to wait for someone to help you. When you have enough muscle, you can get outside and walk with your friends and family. When you don't--you have to stay home. Fortunately, it's never too late to improve your fitness. The best way to stay out of a nursing home and maintain independence is to stay strong. Read More>

Class News
As of this writing, there are 6 weeks left of classes in 2011. Blink, blink, and we'll be in 2012! This Thanksgiving I will be traveling out of town to San Luis Obispo for an adventurous jaunt with family. So the week of Thanksgiving I will only be teaching 2 classes: Monday, Nov 21 and Wednesday, Nov 23. Both of these classes will be held at the San Rafael Community Center. No classes will be held at the Margaret Todd Center during Thanksgiving week.

Also, the Margaret Todd Center and Goldenaries Club close down for 2 weeks, Dec 19 - Jan 2, for a holiday break. No classes will be conducted during that time. However, I sure hope to see your bright shining faces on Jan. 3 in Novato and on Jan. 4 in San Rafael so we can bring in the new year with some healthy frolic and fun!

Win a Free Copy of my Latest Workout DVD
First of all, congratulations to Bunny Arnold and Virginia Dolar, the summertime winners of my Labor Day drawing. They each won a free class. Wa-hoo! For the fall season, in honor of Thanksgiving, I'll be giving away a free copy of my latest Strength, Flexibility & Balance Workout DVD, ($20 value)! I'm still in the production phase, but my intention is to get it done before the holiday break.

To be entered into the drawing go to my Youthful Hearts Blog and leave a comment about anyone of my recent blog posts that I included in this newsletter. (Recent Blog Posts are listed in the right column for your quick reference. Click on each link and you'll find the Comments Section at the bottom of each post.) I'll conduct the drawing on the day after Thanksgiving. Good luck!

A Laugh for Good Health

I don't want to brag or make anyone jealous or anything, but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school.

 Success Story

"A couple of months ago, after a fall and a minor freak accident, I ended up with a cast on one hand and two strapped fingers on the other--which was also bruised and painful.  It was then that I fully understood the benefits of all the core work and chair stands I've been doing in Jeanette's class. There were many things I couldn't do, but I could get up --even from a low couch-- with no assistance from my hands.  It made me that much less dependent. The ability to stand up--even from a couch -- with no hand or arm support is priceless." ~Lyn Jacoby, age 72, Sonoma, CA
