Jeanette's Message
July is my favorite month of the year...a time for warmth, accomplishment, and zestful living! I love how long the days are and how beautiful and bountiful the flower and veggie gardens are. (My husband and I just enjoyed the sweetest, freshest corn on the cob with our dinner. Yum yum!) Since summer is a playful, active time for many people, there is a joyful spirit in the air. When I awaken in the mornings I feel more inspired to pop out of bed and get going! I say to myself, "So many creative things to do...hmmm...what will it be today?" Whatever I end up doing, I make sure that my day includes some fun and, when it's not too hot, some time outdoors too!

I'm betting many of you are planning something festive for our upcoming July 4th holiday. I hope so...it's time to say "Happy Birthday America!" Even if you decide to stay home for a quiet holiday, find a way to experience something uplifting on this special day. On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and democracy was born. Let's celebrate our Nation's freedom and all of our own personal freedoms. We are so fortunate in so many ways.

And by the way, I commend all of you who are choosing to remain active as you grow older to help maintain your own independence in life! Let's continue to make the most of our freedoms by enthusiastically pursuing meaningful goals and enjoying life no matter what our age! Peace and summer blessings!

What is Qigong? (Pronounced 'Chee Gung')

Pictured here are some of my beautiful Youthful Hearts class members, Stephany, Diane, Mary, Maura and Carmel, practicing Qigong, a powerful system of healing and energy medicine from China. Qi means energy and Gong means skill. Qigong (also spelled Chi-Kung) is the art and science of using rhythmic breathing techniques, gentle, slow repetition of movement and and a calm mindful state to circulate life energy, or Qi, throughout the body's energy pathways called meridians. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is thought that if the flow of Qi is blocked or unbalanced at any point on a pathway, we may become ill. When the Qi flows freely in a balanced fashion, health is restored, and disease prevented.

Qigong is the oldest and most popular healing art on the planet--practiced by over 100 million people. The documented history of Qigong goes back approximately 2,500 years. However, Chinese archaeologists and historians have found references to Qigong-like techniques at least 5,000 years old. You may find it interesting to know that Taiji Quan (Tai Chi) is a style of qigong. Like Tai Chi, the slow gentle movements of most Qigong forms can be practiced by all age groups, and easily adapted for the physically challenged.

For me, Qigong is a beautifully flowing movement meditation that cultivates an increased sense of well being, calmness, mental alertness and inner/outer balance. After a Qigong session I usually feel warm, joyful and relaxed all over, as well as energized like a low battery being charged with electrical power! Qigong not only reduces stress, it also stimulates blood circulation and strengthens all the systems and organs of the body. The health benefits of Qigong have been studied extensively. Western scientific research confirms that Qigong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling in older populations.

Many health care professionals recommend Qigong as an important form of alternative complementary medicine. Or you could just do it because it feels good!                                                                        Photo editing by Lynelle Creamer

Relief for Tired Eyes
Do your eyes need a break? These movements will soothe and energize your tired eyes.
  1. Look away from your monitor and slowly blink your eyes several times, then quickly blink them. When you stare at your monitor for a long time without blinking, your eyes get dry. This will help moisten them.
  2. Look away from your monitor and focus on several things at different distances - down the hall, out the window, at the door. Changing the distance of your focus helps relax and energize the eyes.
  3. Rub your palms together to create heat, then place them over your eyes. Hold for several seconds enjoying the warmth and darkness.
Healthy Light & Easy Tuna Wrap
I think all of the recipes in my previous newsletters have been vegetarian. What can I say...we at a lot of garden foods in my family. But we also enjoy flavorful wild fish 1-2 times each week for the outstanding nutritional benefits. So here's a recipe for a scrumptious, low calorie seafood lunch. These tuna wraps are gluten free and have good omega-3 fats and high protein.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients:
6 ounces canned light tuna, in water or tuna only. (See next section for tips on choosing good quality canned tuna.)

¾ cup chopped celery

8 kalamata olives (optional)

5-10 chopped cashews or almonds

½ cup chopped onion

1-2 tablespoon mild salsa

4 large lettuce leaves

1 teaspoon capers (optional if you are looking for a low sodium meal)

1 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

Mix capers, nuts, celery, tuna, olives, onion and salsa in a small bowl. Sprinkle with pepper if desired.

Wash and pat dry lettuce and leave whole. Place tuna mixture in the lettuce down the center of the stalk. Wrap and enjoy!                               Thanks Amanda Russell for this great lunch recipe.

Tips on Choosing the Right Canned Tuna

Since I'm sharing a recipe that uses tuna, I won't sleep well tonight if I don't suggest some guidelines to follow when shopping for canned tuna. Many of the canned tunas you find on supermarket shelves have unhealthy ingredients in them, so read the labels to become aware of what you are actually eating. For best nutrition, buy canned tuna that consists of tuna only, or tuna and water with our without salt. (Sea salt is best in my opinion, if you prefer salt added.) And I don't recommend buying tuna that is packed in oil. It's counterproductive. Oil mixes with oil so the natural omega-3 rich oils from the fish mix with the packing oil and when you drain the tuna, a lot of the important omega-3s go down the drain!

Fun Fact
Sleeping burns more calories than watching TV. We burn about 95 calories per hour during sleep and about 85 calories per hour while watching TV.

Because sleep is rejuvenating and reparative, our brains and bodies are at work while we sleep and require caloric expenditure. Getting 8 hours of sleep at night actually helps your metabolism work better so you end up burning more calories throughout the week. On the other hand, the brain slows down quite a bit when we watch TV even though we're awake, kind of like being hypnotized. Too much TV time along with mindless snacking can lead to weight gain and health issues.

There may not be a big difference in calorie expenditure between sleeping and TV watching, but research clearly shows that limiting TV time and getting enough sleep has its benefits! Looking to burn more calories while watching TV? Pop in an exercise DVD and get moving!
