Jeanette's Message
Greetings Youthful Hearts,
Today is the celebrated day of love! Happy Valentines Day!  Personally, I don't believe that the sentiment, "Be my Valentine," is reserved for our significant others only. Especially since it actually means, "You are loved." So then...will YOU be my Valentine?

I hope your new year is going well so far. I know a few of you Y.H. subscribers live in areas that have been getting crazy cold weather this winter. Even Texas! Hope you're managing okay through it all. Here in California, we've got storms on the way. But we've had such gorgeous weather lately that I almost feel guilty about it. Almost. ;-)

I've enjoyed creating this February newsletter, and I hope that it benefits you in some way. Your feedback is invaluable to me and others, so I really appreciate the comments that some of you have left on my blog. Feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, share your experience or voice your opinions!

I wish you all a safe, healthy and cozy end to your winter, and I look forward to connecting with you in class or online.
In gratitude,
Jeanette

Five Minutes of Fitness After Fifty,
Video Episode #2: Balance

Falling is a major cause of injury to seniors. When we were younger, our brain, muscles, nerves, ears and eyes worked really well together to keep us upright and steady on our feet. However, as we age our equilibrium and balance decline, mostly due to reduced physical activity. We need to consciously work our balance skills to keep them functioning well for us.

The good news is that with ongoing practice, you can dramatically improve your balance. So let's get moving! Follow along with me in this 5 minute video for a fantastic balance workout, made especially for baby boomers and seniors.  Click on the video below to be taken to a private page for my subscribers. Once there, enter the password JOY to view the video. (Use uppercase letters: JOY). Get your blood flowing, your body balanced and your mind turned on

Was this video useful for you? I would love to hear your feedback! For my next video, I was thinking of focusing on leg strength. Would you like that? Or do you have any requests? Click here to go back to the video page and leave a comment.

If you have trouble standing, I've made a special seated balance training video for you. Click here and type in the password JOY to play this specialized video.

Are We Having Fun Yet?
We all have an inner kid who wants to come out and play. If we ignore this part of ourselves for too long, then anxiety builds and our immune systems become compromised. Playtime is an important piece of the of the wellness pie. Positive emotions such as love and joy actually help the cells in our body do their jobs more efficiently and effectively. There is an entire field of science dedicated to studying the affect that our mental processes and emotions have on our health. It is called Psychoneuroimmunology. To me, this is FASCINATING! Click here to read more and see what I do for fun. Plus, two great videos.

The Ultimate Fast Food
Want a delicious, quick and easy way to optimize your health and increase your vitality? Green smoothies will do the trick! They're just like fruit smoothies, but with the addition of power packed leafy greens such as spinach, kale, collard greens, or chard. In a green smoothie, the sweetness of fruit masks the natural bitterness of leafy greens--so you may be surprised at how good it can be. My husband and I both feel that green smoothies and green juices, which we've been drinking for years, have greatly contributed to our long-standing good health. So I wanted to share one of my favorite recipes with you. Click here to read more>

Class News
Last year, I met quite a few people who wanted to join one of my exercise classes but couldn't because their physical challenges prevented them from being able to participate. I wanted to be of service to this special group so I became inspired to offer a new Chair Aerobics class at the Margaret Todd Senior Center. I'm so happy to report that, along with all of my longstanding classes, this new chair exercise program got off to a great start in January! I love teaching this class and hope to generate enough interest in it to continue teaching it for the long term.

I would really appreciate your help in spreading the word. If you know anyone who needs a safe and practical alternative to traditional exercise (due to limited mobility issues), will you please let them know about about my chair exercise program?  Class benefits include improvements in stamina, strength, posture, agility, flexibility, respiratory health and overall better well being. And having fun of course!

Our chair exercise class meets on Tuesdays at 12:35pm - 1:05pm at the Margaret Todd Center. The next session begins on Feb. 15, but newcomers are welcome to start anytime. To find out more, contact me or visit this page: New Class: Chair Aerobics

Success Story

"After being in Jeanette's class for only a very short time, I no longer have the shoulder pain that I thought was the end of my golfing. I also feel stronger, and have better posture and fuller breathing.  Her obvious joy with what she does communicates to the class and helps me to reach levels of movement that I never thought possible."
~Shirley McClung, age 73, San Rafael, CA

"One day at a time-this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."
