Next week: Smart & Successful Answers to Job Interview Questions
In a job interview, it is easy to panic a little and say
the first thing that pops into your head when asked a question. Not smart. When it comes to interviewing, you should know -- in advance -- what you want to share with the hiring company before you start an interview.
Build your checklist for the job which will include all the essential items to convince the interviewer you have the proper skill set for the job. The checklist also ensures you do not go on tangents or rush to answer questions with less than optimal examples. Recruiter Jeff Lipschultz shares how to analyze the job description and build your checklist for success in 3
steps.

Do not view your job interviews as a "test" you must pass
to get a job offer. Rather, view it as a business meeting. To the interviewers, the interview is like any business conversation. They have some points they want to share, some questions they want to ask, and they are hoping you do as well.
They want to get to know you -- hear what motivates you, why you want their job, what you enjoy, what you don’t enjoy, etc. This is the type of thing they discuss after you leave the room; not how many “right” vs. “wrong” answers you gave. Former recruiter and Job Search Expert Biron Clark offers 4 ways to turn your job interview into a conversation and win that next job
offer.
In today's job search, you typically face much
competition. How to stand out? To differentiate yourself in a positive way, become a STAR. The STAR response is a powerful technique the savvy job seeker can use to share examples of your work successes in a way that will resonate with the interviewer.
To build your STARs, start with a list of your successes, your accomplishments, and recognition you have received in your work and in school, if appropriate. Then, put together stories which are real examples of your successes, structured like this: Situation - Task - Action - Result. Recruiter Ed Han shares examples of
successful STARs and how you can create your own.
Eighty-six percent of employers view candidates who do not
send thank you notes as clearly not good at "follow through" -- which is a big negative for them. So, sending a thank you, if done reasonably well, will definitely improve your chances at landing a job.
Best case, your thank you will improve the impression you left after the interview, making you stand out from your competitors. Worst case, your thank you will be ignored. So the benefit definitely outweighs the cost in time and effort. In this article, Job Interviewing Expert Laura DeCarlo shares how to write your best thank you note to leave the most positive impression, with many
examples in this Guide.
