Welcome to the first quarterly edition of OGSR Wireline in 2021.
Geology, geology, geology was the theme of 2020. Library staff focused on updating thousands of records in a rigorous quality assurance program that will be the topic of an upcoming paper from the Geological Survey of Canada. Staff also focused on delivering more of the geology and data holdings to you remotely.
In 2021 staff continue to focus on delivering more data online and creating new ways of visualizing and interacting with data, like virtual reality applications and inexpensive 3D printed models.
Important reminder to all operators: Deadline for 2020 annual reporting is approaching, new forms for 2020 reporting are available from the OGSR Library website.

Summary of 2020 Industry Activities

Like everything in 2020 progress in Ontario’s petroleum and subsurface industries was hampered by global health concerns. Activity was limited to essential work either through necessity or
mandate, depending on the time of year. The industry responded by focusing on plugging wells and maintenance, not letting time pass without attending to these stewardship activities. The year ended with several wells being licensed for activity to take place in 2021 and we look forward to new drilling starts in this year with optimism.
In 2020, no new wells reached total depth, according to reporting received to-date. New reporting became available for well T012615 that reached total depth in 2019 and can be accessed through the library.
Industry activity focused on well plugging with a total of 24 wells plugged in 2020, mostly during the summer month and into early fall (table 1).
A total of eight new licences were issued in 2020. Three were issued for existing wells and five for new drilling starts (table 1).

Activity at the OGSR Library was certainly up in 2020 as we worked to prepare the new lithostratigraphic and hydrostratigraphic models of southwestern Ontario. These models build on the previously released lithostratigraphic model and are intended for use as tools in all types of subsurface exploration.

The OGSR Library has already built upon lithostratigraphic model version one with exciting new exploration capabilities available through the library. Virtual reality presentations and 3D printed models customized to any study area can be ordered through the library. This allows users to travel through the geological setting of their choosing in an immersive stereoscopic video or hold a miniature version of a
geological formation in their hands.

Happy 2021!
We have started a tradition here at the OGSR Library: For the last two years on Christmas eve, we release a virtual reality video. This year we released the long in the works Glacial Geology Tour of London, ON. Filmed in April 2019 as part of the EPEX conference, this field trip video explores features left behind from the end of the Wisconsin Glaciation 10,000 – 15,000 years ago, right here in London, ON.
Learn about moraines, kettle lakes, ridges, glacial till, and more. Watch in your VR headset or on a regular screen, where you can use your mouse to look in any direction. This was our first attempt at a VR field trip video. It provided many technical challenges and really pushed the hardware we have to its limits. How did we do? Visit our YouTube channel and let us know in the comments.
Coming up in 2021, we will have more VR video content. We are working on a VR video tour of bedrock aquifers, which will visit different locations representing major aquifer and aquitard units, starting deep in the Cambrian and moving up into the Devonian. This video will coincide with the release of the hydrostratigraphic model that will also be released sometime this year. Our next VR video will highlight major resources and where they are found. If you have ever
wondered what it’s like to descend deep underground into a storage cavern to have a look around, you will be in luck!
We will also be releasing non-VR content. 2020 provided little opportunity for field trips, however in 2019 we gathered and stored a ton of field trip footage that we hope to release soon. You might even say enough for an entire second season of Rock Talks! Some episodes we’ve filmed include such locations as Balls Falls, Niagara Gorge, Eramosa Karst Conservation Area, and more! As always, stay tuned to find out more.

Happy New Year from the OGSRL geology team! As we dive into our first quarterly 2021 newsletter update, we wanted to highlight some of our project results from 2020, as well as letting people know about some of our current and future workplans.
Last year the OGSRL geology team performed Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) on geological formation tops from Ontario’s petroleum wells as part of a multi-year 3D Geological model project in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) and Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). The geology team took part in three special projects that examined petroleum wells located within Huron and Bruce Counties,
wells that intersect the Silurian Lockport and lower Salina Group formations and wells that transected the Rouge River and Collingwood Members. The list below shows the number of wells and formations reviewed during the three projects, in addition to the total number of new formation picks added to our geological database.

As a result of these projects, geological formations that experienced significant improvements include the Lucas and Dundee formations tops within Huron and Bruce County, and the number of wells that record the presence of Devonian Columbus Sands and Columbus Equivalent facies. Refinements were also made to the Lockport’s various carbonate lithofacies, which includes the identification of the A-1 Carbonate and Guelph for both Pinnacle reefs and interpinnacle
regions, the removal of erroneous Eramosa formation top picks, and the identification of the Goat Island and Gasport formations. Prior to this project, industry practice had been to identify the entire thickness of a pinnacle as the Guelph Formation. Numerous improvements were also made to the upper Ordovician Rouge River and Collingwood Members, where historically the black shales of the Rouge River Member were often erroneously identified and documented as the Collingwood Member. Formation
tops for Shadow Lake and Cambrian were also improved, particularly in areas near the Cambrian erosional boundaries. The refinement of our geological data can be used for several purposes such as the exploration for and development of hydrocarbon and mineral resources, hydrocarbon and compressed air storage, studies related to deep geological storage, mapping intermediate and deep groundwater systems and geological education, which benefits both our OGSRL clients and Ontario’s Petroleum Industry.
Formal reports on these results will soon be available publicly as part of a GSC open file report on the 3D Geological Model.
More recently, the geology team completed a QA/QC project on the chemical analyses of oil, gas and water samples obtained from southern Ontario’s petroleum wells. Currently, we have records for 1527 water, 490 gas and 245 oil chemical analyses and their corresponding sample formations.
Looking forward into 2021, the geology team will continue to provide geological support for the 3D regional model, with a focus on southern Ontario’s Devonian hydrostratigraphic units.
To start off the new year, the OGSRL has new and updated data available to support your projects! Production reports for 2017, 2018 and 2019 are scanned and available as PDFs. Updates were made to the Injection database, Disposal database, and Gas and Oil Production databases. We have also been diligently growing our collection of core photos and chip sample photos, which are ideal for remote geology viewing.
The library is continuing to provide mapping and data services remotely. This year, I am looking forward to assisting clients with projects and inquiries, as well as providing mapping and database support to the geology team with their upcoming QA/QC projects.

What is the OGSR Library?
The Oil, Gas & Salt Resources Library is a not-for-profit corporation that manages all of Ontario's public drilling and production data from the petroleum and solution mined salt industries. This includes processing, storing, and providing safe and convenient access to all of the industry's drill core and rock cuttings. The Library makes as much of this data as possible available through our online portal to members all over the world. The financial support of the petroleum industry and
our membership make this possible.
