Have you had a day (week?!) where your to do list is growing exponentially because nothing is actually coming off? Fire after fire, important meeting supersedes planned meeting. (#prodmgmt, amirite?) Things are not going as planned, goals are not going
to be met.
How do you get back in front?
How do you keep your mojo?
These are not rhetorical questions. No, really! Write me back what works for you. We're better when we work together.
For me I found
reflection helps me get back in front. The word reflection can become a synonym for only finding gratitude. Which is true, and a constant awareness of what you can be grateful for will make a happier life. But here I mean a comprehensive look back:
- what worked
- what didn't
- what was surprising
- what should you try to
replicate
- what should you work to develop the discipline to not have happen again
Setting aside 30 minutes to think about for me is key. But that's not the end of the story. It's only a third of it. It's also talking about it, processing through your reflections, with someone such as a friend or mentor. And standing on that processing to move forward. Continuing to support and coach your team to build
amazing solutions to your customer's problems.
One of the biggest lessons to continually learn in Product Management is how to leverage your team for the greatest success. That isn't just shipping code. It's your reflection, team support to process it, and using it that will push the team (and you) forward.
