Whole Whale Is Out! (Well, It's Been Out.)
Welcome to the first edition of my Purposeful Prose newsletter! I meant to send this before my debut picture book came out, but I was naive about the extent my author life would be consumed by marketing.
To date, my promotional efforts have resulted in: a dozen interviews, five guest blog posts, three videos (including a Barefoot Books TikTok!), several (I lost count) virtual events, and one on-site book signing. And I've already begun promoting my second book, So Not Ghoul, which isn't out for another year! All this to say, please forgive me for not sending a newsletter sooner.
Some good news: I received two wonderful trade reviews! The one from SLJ came out last week, which was a total shock, because Whole Whale has been out since June 1, 2021. But I'll take it! (The illustrator of Whole Whale is award-winning artist Nelleke Verhoeff.)
School Library Journal says:
"This simple rhyming book packs a powerful message: 'When everybody makes some space, one more can always find a place.' Verhoeff’s vibrant drawings are perfectly paired with Yin’s words…VERDICT Recommended for early childhood collections, this brisk and funny rhyming story will be a hit at story times."

American Library Association's Booklist says:
"The artwork is cheerful and bright with high-contrast colors, depicting wonderfully unusual animals…But perhaps the truest charm of this book lies in its language, rich with assonance, alliteration, and internal and end rhymes and liltingly cadenced with read-aloud rhythm."

Please read on! I have a few kidlit events lined up, and you can also find links to the latest interviews and guest blog posts below. If you'd like to enter the Whole Whale giveaway, read and comment on my post on loglines. The drawing will be held on Sept. 3, 2021.
Peace to you and yours,
Karen Yin
