Hey, Hive Mind…

I have a disrupter challenge for you.

I've seen countless instances where technology has redefined a traditional industry, making it more convenient and accessible... think AirBnB and hospitality, or Uber and transportation, or manufacturing and automation. In each instance, some innovative brain looked at some service or product or thing and thought: “XYZ would be so much better, if only…”

Too often, we just do what we’ve always done, accepting that it’s not perfect but this is how it works, without stopping to think what if… what if it didn’t have to be this way? What if it could be better? That’s the trick to being an effective disruptor – being able to recognize and respond to the “what if”.

Which makes me wonder – how can we apply disrupter thinking to Atlantic Business Magazine?

The case study: we’re a small but mighty 35-year-old publishing company with print and online products, plus in-person events. We use advanced print technologies to design/print/distribute our magazines. We've been using Forestry Stewardship Council certified paper and print processes for well over a decade. We publish online, both desktop and flipbook versions. We manage six distinct recognition programs:
  • Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada
  • Readers Choice Awards for Best B2B Service Providers
  • Atlantic Canada’s 25 Most Powerful Women in Business
  • Top 50 CEO awards
  • Employers of Diversity
  • ICE creative marketing awards
  • 30 Under 30 Innovators
So yeah, we think we’re all that and a bag of chips. But we’re no Google.

How can we be better? What’s the “what if” that could make us a market leader, not only in Atlantic Canada, but nationally – maybe even internationally?

Or, to be precise, how would you finish this sentence: “Atlantic Business Magazine is great, but they would be so much better if…”

I haven’t been told yet today, but there’s still time. Consider this your open invitation to really unload.
