My co-owner, Tonia Hutton, and I often joke that January is our “slip and slide”. One minute it’s New Year’s, we blink and it’s summer, then we take a breath and it’s the end of December again. I only wish I was kidding.
Here we are, just three-quarters of the way through January, and we’re days away from sending our March issue to press. January’s issue is just three weeks old and it already feels like the distant past. I knew the Best Places to Work and Readers’ Choice award would be big headliners, but did you catch Stephen Kimber’s investigative report on Peggys Cove? Who knew there was so much controversy behind the scenes of that postcard-perfect paradise?
Anyway, March is our annual Power issue and it’s a big one. We’ll be exploring myriad definitions of power and what that means to regional economic activity. Like the legacy and future of Atlantic Canada’s most powerful family-owned company, Irving Oil. And the Upper Churchill power play (there’s no time like the present for Hydro Quebec to renegotiate the Upper Churchill). We’re also digging into the buying (and hiring) power of immigrant entrepreneurs, the generational transition of power to a young cohort of emerging leaders, and Indigenous communities that are reclaiming their cultural power via economic development.
And even as we’re putting the finishing touches on the March issue, we’re simultaneously planning our May/June corporate leadership edition (which come with another gala event, this one being hosted in St. John’s, N.L. on May 9).
While we’re working on that, we’re also focused on the ICE Awards we’ll be hosting in Halifax on October 3… and our ongoing Change the World Challenge… and our Employers of Diversity awards… and collaborating with our new editorial advisory board on content creation for four more magazines this year. (Thank you Andrea King, Mark Leger, Sally Ng, Rose Paul and Peter Woodward)… and building partnerships, planning podcasts, developing social media campaigns… there really is no end to the to-do list.
