The Y Victoria Event: Developing Choice-making Skills through Outdoor Education and Outdoor Therapy with Tanya Ginwala
|
LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE Monday 29 April, 10am – 1pm Choice is a complex dynamic and relational process influenced by internal factors, culture, and life experiences. Many individuals participating in experiential learning and outdoor education and outdoor therapy programs may have restrictions in their skills and insight into making healthy choices or incorporating care into their choice-making process due to various factors such as
trauma, systemic oppression, or limited development opportunities. Outdoor education and therapy programs provide unique opportunities for facilitators to model and participants to learn choice-making skills through intentional learning, reflection, practice, and engagement with others and the environment. Drawing from Experiential Education methodologies, Dewey’s theory of
valuation and Indigenous and feminist perspectives on care ethics, this interactive workshop offers a space to delve into the nuances of choice-making.
Tanya will explore the benefits of incorporating
choice-making in experiential learning pedagogy using observational research, field notes from an outdoor therapy program in the Himalayas, and reflection on professional facilitation and teaching practices.
Participants in the workshop will gain fresh insights and practical tools for fostering environments that are safe, inclusive, and equitable for nurturing choice-making
skills rooted in care for oneself, others, and the natural environment.
Please email ACA Membership Manager, Dwight Hulme to express your interest to attend this The Y - Victoria event: places are limited!

Member Morning Tea - South Australia
|
23 May 2024 | 9:30am (ACST) | Camp Finniss ACA Member Morning Teas provide a wonderful opportunity for you and your staff to meet other Members. The Norm Howard Outdoor Education Centre (Camp Finniss) rests on Ngarrindjeri Country alongside the Finniss River, in South Australia’s Lower Lakes region. Affectionately known as Finniss Campsite by the students of St Peter’s College, the school has owned and operated the campus for over 35 years. During this time, many
young hands have revegetated the 48 acres from paddock to native bushland. In addition to waterfront access for aquatic activities, 80 guests utilise the playing field, gymnasium, bike riding track and various bush shelters across the property. Utilised for outdoor education, youth ministry and school sporting retreats, the Norm Howard Outdoor Education Centre serves as a hub for experiential learning, personal challenge, spiritual development and growth of community. Outside of these programs,
it is available for other groups to enjoy. We'll update you on the ACA News, you'll have the opportunity to have a tour of the site and you'll meet (or catch up with) other members. Event Location: Camp Finniss, 408 Finniss-Clayton Road, Finniss South Australia 5255
