Mantra Meditation Basics:

Although the ultimate purpose of Mantra Meditation is to help you realize your divine nature, many studies have shown that it's practice bestows many practical benefits as well.  These include, better health, peace, joy, clarity, insight, increased concentration and stress relief to name just a few.

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to do Mantra Meditation, so you too may enjoy the benefits it's practice bestows.

Mantra Meditation Postures

Meditation Posture w/ Drona Mudra

Meditation Posture w/ Gyan Mudra

Steps to do Mantra Meditation:
  1. Sit up nice and tall, with your spine straight and your chin tucked in slightly, like a soldier at attention.  If you cannot take a cross legged posture you may sit on a chair as well.

  2. Place your hands in Drona Mudra or Gyan Mudra, unless you are using a prayer mala.  See illustrations above.

If you are using a mala, typically 108 beads long, then you will be holding that in one hand and rotating the beads between your thumb and third finger.  You will advance one bead for each repetition of the mantra.

  3. You may repeat the mantra aloud, in a whisper or just intone it mentally.  You can change between these approaches to keep the practice fresh.

  4. Try to keep your mind fixed on the meaning of the mantra during the duration of the practice.

  5. Once you are done with your practice, don't immediately jump into daily life, try to spend 10 minutes or so in solitude and let the affects of the mantra work on you.

  6. You can do mantra meditation for 10 minutes all the way to the whole day if you like.  If you are just starting out, be patient with your practice and try to build up to 30 minute sessions, in order to start reaping the real benefits of the mantra.

4 Powerful New Mantras for Meditation:

In the bottom section you will find links to 5 of the most popular mantra meditation articles with free MP3 downloads.  These and more mantra MP3s can be found in the Free Online Mantra MP3s Collections.

Here I will list for you 4 new mantras which are excellent for meditation practice.

The first 2 mantras below will appeal to those who are emotional in nature and are associated with aspects of Divinity, while the last 2 will appeal to the intellectuals and are not associated with any particular divinity.

You are also free to pick any other mantra which appeals to you.  An excellent book for those interested in studying mantra meditation in more detail is Meditation and Mantras, by Swami Vishnu Devananda.

Mantra #1:

Om Namah Shivaya:

This mantra is devoted to Lord Shiva, the aspect of divinity responsible for the destruction of ignorance and attachment, and the deity for those who follow Jyana Yoga, or the intellectual path of yoga.

The mantra means, Prostrations to Lord Shiva.

Mantra #2:

Om Maha Ganapataye Namah:

This mantra is devoted to Lord Ganesha.  Ganesha is considered the remover of obstacles and this and other Ganesha mantras are recited at the inception of projects so that success can be achieved.

This mantra means, Prostrations to the great Lord Ganesha.

Mantra #3:

Aham Brahma Asmi:

This mantra means, I am Brahman or I am Supreme Consciousness.

This mantra comes from the great school of non-duality, or Advaita Vedanta.  By repeating this mantra and keeping it's meaning in mind, you are looking to break free of the dualistic view of the Universe and see the false nature of separate individualistic existence.

Mantra #4:

Tat Twam Asi:

This mantra means, Thou Art That.

Like Aham Brahma Asmi, this mantra also comes from the philosophy which recognizes the great Oneness of everything.  It reminds the meditator that he and the Supreme Consciousness are indeed one and the same.
