Ruth Duregello is the first woman in history to be president of the Jewish community in Rome, where the number of synagogues has increased to 19. Last Sunday she welcomed Pope Francis on his first visit as pontiff to the Great Synagogue of Rome. Since making this visit the pope has been invited to visit Rome's Great Mosque.
