We’ve had a great summer in Galveston, Texas. Yes, it has been hot and humid. Bob’s been working at Galveston Island RV Resort, so he’s been out in the heat every day. People ask, why, when we could be back home in Alaska, are we down here in the south?
Well, the first answer that comes to mind is this: We’ve already spent summers in Alaska. We haven’t spent a summer on a southern beach for many years. We’re enjoying the change.
But, there are several other reasons, as well.
Bob likes working here. He likes working with the park owners and his coworkers. They treat us well. He’s enjoying the work he’s doing—everything from swimming pool maintenance to planting palm trees, and from working the pizza wagon to taking care of crises, such as when someone backs over the water line.
We’re enjoying the area culture.
You know that we travel the country to eat. Here, we are feasting at restaurants that feature Ecuadorian, Honduran, and Salvadorian foods. They join the line-up of more common Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican, German, Indian, Pakistani, Greek, and Italian restaurants. We’ve also had Cajun food, soul food, fresh seafood, and first class bar-b-que. We joke that we’re going to have to stay here for a few more months, because there are still so many restaurants we haven’t tried.
We’re enjoying resort life! An after work frozen margarita, with Jimmy buffet music playing in the background, hits the spot. We’re spoiled by spicy hot-wings and pizza at our beck-and-call. An evening golf cart ride through the park lets us see all the different kinds of RVs.
Besides a swimming pool and hot tub, there’s a lazy river. I hadn’t been in a swimsuit since 2012, when we were on the beach in Mexico. But, the lazy river is so inviting that we’ve been going several evenings a week. It is so unlike me—but, I’m enjoying the exercise of water walking.
A couple years back, we spent a month here. Shortly after that, I wrote an article comparing three RV parks in Texas that we had stayed at that winter.
Galveston has something else that is a big attraction for us: the cruise ship port. RVing is life for us—not vacation. So, to get away from things and take a break, we like cruises. The most expensive part of them is often the transportation to the port and back. Here, we can leave the motorhome in the park; park staff take us to the port on departure day: and pick us up when we return. We’re taking
advantage of the convenience, and with the savings of cruising now instead of when we are located elsewhere. We took a Western Bahamas cruise in March, and we have another one planned for next month. I’ll write more about these later.
Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,
Coleen
P.S. If you are traveling this way, use my name to get yourself a freebie. Check into the resort here anytime after Labor Day and before the end of October. Tell them you are my friend. You’ll get a little something free. I’ve heard it might be a t-shirt or something very frosty and very tasty to drink, but I can’t say for sure what you’ll get.
RV Life and Travel Tip
If fishing is part of your RV life and travels, this tip is for you. Before sticking your fish into the freezer, add water to the container. It's best to completely submerge the fish. However, even a water glaze on them will help prevent freezer burn.

RV Life and Travel Tip
If you have the type of lights in your RV that have two sections, put a brighter bulb in one side and a smaller watt light bulb in the other. Use one side for general room lighting and the other side for a night light. When you need brighter lights, such as for reading, use them both.
If you want to update, and save electricity, consider switching to LED lights. We found a variety of LED fixtures for under $10 each. They fit in the same spaces as the original motorhome lights.

Carry two shorter drinking water hoses in your RV rather than one long one. When you don't need the extra length, you won't have the excess hose in the way. When you do nee the length, use the two together. And, if one springs a leak, you can use the other until you get the leaky one replaced.
