Whew! Where do I start today?
Ooops! Happy Sunday to you again my friend - please excuse my bad manners :-)
But yes, I do have a lot, including the updated curfew hours as of last Wednesday (Aug 11).
But just before, I want to bring your attention to this (now increasingly popular) SPOTLIGHT video interview I had with Maura - an American friend of mine who has been living in Jamaica for 14 years!
What surprised me most about it was the enormous interest persons have in this rather niche topic!
I admit though, some great information was shared, particularly useful for expats and persons coming into live in Jamaica for a short while from another foreign country.
So if you missed this last SPOTLIGHT Live (we host it every Wednesday on my YouTube channel here), you can watch the LIVE REPLAY of it here.
I'm confident that there will be some insightful information for you as well, yes YOU :-)
And now the curfews!
The PM announced another raft of measures (actually, its better to say 'updated measures') last week, which took effect on Wednesday, and, if you have not yet seen them, you need to.
But, as usual, we make it easy; I have the running article with the very latest, so please take a look at it here:
And now the official video for this week!
Do you remember the old time, traditional Jamaican figurines?
Oh sorry, perhaps you are too young to know them :-)
Well, in this video, the 'figurine man' takes us to his humble shack in a morass (literally) and showed us some of his finest work, but also demonstrated how he still makes Jamaican figurines after 40 years - and loving it!
Here is it embedded below.
Please be sure to LIKE and comment.
And if you like it, please SHARE it with someone, the more the merrier!
Featured Jamaican Product
But do you notice a trend?
Oh yeah, it is just how skillful our people are with their hands!
We take just about anything and craft something of it.
So today, I salute all the craftsmen and women - indeed all creators 'by hand'.
Not only are the keeping the wheels of the local economy turning, they in many respects, are helping to keep the Jamaican heritage and culture alive.
So yes, they are my 'featured product' this week!
Another special shout out to the 'Figurine Man' I captured in the video above.
So you see the video, but what you didn't see was the level of commitment and dedication he showed for us to finally meet up and get that video done at his workplace.
There were so many obstacles, from conflicting priorities to even an accident on the way that delayed us for about 2 hours - hence the peenie wallies (night creatures) you heard in the video :-)
Again, I thank him, and wish him loads of favor and opportunities.
Did you know...
... that of all the Caribbean islands, Jamaica has the highest number of endemic species? This includes 27 endemic reptiles and 28 endemic birds (Koenig, 2000).
This too, is yet another interesting fact from my 101 Intriguing Facts About Jamaica book.
Yesterday we heard of another deadly earthquake (7.1 magnitude) on our neighboring Caribbean island, Haiti.
And reports are that it was felt in sections of Jamaica too!
Our hearts goes out to the people of Haiti!
Just when you think they've have had it, another catastrophe hits, OMG.
Please, let's keep them in our prayers - all of Haiti, but especially the most vulnerable people there.
In the meantime as I always say, #StaySafeAndSane!
