Happy Sunday ,
I hope and trust that you are doing well on your side.
Question for you?
Are you superstitious?
Do you believe in omens?
What if I tell you that if a lizard jumps on a woman it is a sign that she is pregnant? And that if your right palm itches, you will receive money very soon, would you believe me?
Don't answer, that's fine 😊
Jamaicans, in general though, are extremely superstitious, you know right?
And today, as part of our heritage month features, I'll share 14 traditional, but still common, Jamaican superstitions with you.
Here is the full link (below) https://www.my-island-jamaica.com/14-common-jamaican-superstitions.html, enjoy 👻
By the way, as part of the month long commemorating aspects of our heritage, we just closed out last week (week 1) with over a dozen exclusive articles on Jamaican food -from the influences of the early migrants to Jamaican food facts and even recipes of the most loved dishes and desserts.
And now, the...
There's a new and amazing plant that is creating waves in the health and wellness industry here in Jamaica. Its the Annatto!
In this video I met with Mr. Winston Barr, a Jamaican spice expert in Maroon Town, Jamaica.
The goal? To learn more about this amazing plant (the achiote, aka lipstick tree) and its potential health benefits.
In addition to his wise words, we also gleaned surprising information from Dr. Barrie Tan, Phd, that in addition to its obvious coloring attribute, it...
- aids in digestion
- prevent birth defects
- lowers fever
- clears mucus from the lungs
- strengthen bones
- boots eye health
- improves skin care
- heal wounds
- eliminate headaches
- relieve stomach issues
- protect respiratory distress
- lowers blood sugar levels
- as well as a possible anti cancer treatment.
And by the way, in addition to its use cosmetics (lipstick etc.), cuisines (marination) and pharmaceuticals (colors to vitamins, capsules etc.) it is also used traditionally as an insect repellent!
Get ready to be amazed!

Ok this one is not quite touristy, but is fact.
In fact, in terms of hard goods, it is the largest export from Jamaica by dollar value. It is aluminum oxide or hydroxide (bauxite and alumina).
It was discovery of bauxite in the 1940s and the subsequent establishment of the bauxite-alumina industry that shifted Jamaica's economy from sugar and bananas.
And by the 1970s, Jamaica had emerged as a world leader in export of these minerals as foreign investment increased.
In 2019, it accounted for up to 52% of the value of all traditional exports from Jamaica!
Now you know!
Today I salute one of my most dedicated peeps on the YouTube side.
Her YT name is Bloss Hill. She seems to never miss a video and is usually one of the very first to comment and share my videos.
Thank you Bloss!
Did you know...
... that in Jamaica is found one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the Western Hemisphere?
It was founded by the Jews of Port Royal in the latter part of the seventeenth century when a Jewish community flourished there.
Port Royal was an impressive commercial center then and the Jews who arrived there took a prominent part in its activities.
The Jews excelled in the trade of gold and silver, and in money changing.
This old Jewish Cemetery is located at 1 Hunt's Bay in St. Andrew.
This too, is yet another interesting fact from my 101 Intriguing Facts About Jamaica book.
