Becoming Olive W. by S. Lee Fisher

Orphaned as a toddler, Olive, a bright feisty child, struggles to establish her place in a wealthy dysfunctional family.

Her sisters are jealous, her brothers are threatened, her father, inept as a parent is dependent on her skills.

Set in the early 1900s, follow her path from child to a young woman in a time before women had the right to vote.

Targeted Age Group:: 16 to adult

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Becoming Olive W. was written as a prequel to my first novel, A Mystery of Grace. I wanted my readers to understand why Olive became such a troubled, bitter woman.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I enjoy writing dialogue, so I have actual conversations with my characters. The folks in this novel/ series are simple yet complicated and intensely emotional. They portray the life of rural America in the early 1900s.

Western Pennsylvania, 1905

“Mama, Mama!”
Olive, a curly blonde-haired girl with pale blue eyes, climbed onto the bed and wrapped her arms around her mother’s neck.
Polly Westchester coughed at the touch of her child. She lay motionless, waiting for the pain of her next contraction. Her children circled the iron bed, watching Polly struggle to breathe. Polly’s pale face had assumed a shade of gray. Her eyes reflected the purple and yellow wallpaper deliberately darkened by drawn draperies. Shining on the ceiling, a single dot of light refracted from the daisy-filled crystal vase.
Ben, Olive’s oldest brother, grabbed the child around the waist. “Come, sweetie. Leave Mama be.”
After carrying her out of the bedroom, Ben deposited Olive in the corner landing of the back staircase, leading to the kitchen. Olive immediately began a backward descent on her hands and knees.
“Do not play on the steps alone, Olive,” said Ben, gently.
“Stay here and wait for me.”
Olive sat on the plank floor, drawing circles with her finger in the sticky, warm, red liquid that covered her legs. A bitter taste filled her mouth as she sucked on her fingers. She gagged.
“Mama,” the tiny voice repeated, sobbing.
Her father, Henderson, rushed in from the barn, pushing her aside on his way up the stairs.
“When did labor start? Why wasn’t I called sooner? Levi, fetch the doctor. Hurry. Ride hard,” Henderson barked at his third son as his calloused hands caressed his wife. “Polly, stay with me. You’ve done this seven times before. Look at me. Stay with me.”

Shattered Reality by C.A. King, USA Today Bestselling Author

The only reality that matters is the one believed in and that can change in the blink of an eye… or a glance in the mirror.

Mudesa Black clawed her way to the top, becoming a successful and respected psychiatrist, leaving her estranged family in the dust. The plan was to never look back and she hadn’t until a single phone call changed everything. Trading her physician’s coat for a detective cap, she headed home to meet both fears and destiny head on.

Perry P. worked as a private investigator in Knollville, taking on whatever cases came his way. His latest, and only, client had no issues spending money—just the way he liked it. They were also anonymous—just the way he didn’t like it. Still, the job was easy money. All he needed to do was watch some dame for a few months.

There are mysteries waiting in the aging mansion. Solving them might bring closure to both in ways neither imagined possible.

Shattered Reality is a fantasy retelling of the ancient mythological tale of Perseus and Medusa set in modern times.

Targeted Age Group:: 15 to 35

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I enjoy twisting myths and legends into something entirely different, while maintaining some semblance to the original tale. Since the story of Perseus and Medusa has always fascinated me, it made sense to bring the two into modern times. Then I through in a sprinkling of mirror magic to make it all shine.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The characters are loosely based on the original duo, Perseus and Medusa. I simply moved them into current times. Medusa, the MC is still a gorgon, although not yet awakened (Named Mudesa). As the plot progresses, so do personalities.

The Mission (A Bulwark Anthology Book 10) by C.C. Bolick

As a pilot recruited for a government agency, Amber hides a secret. Twenty years ago, she left her small southern town without looking back. To complete her training, she’ll face her worst fear. No one else remembers that night or sees the ghost who calls her name…

Targeted Age Group:: 13+

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The Mission was written as part of an anthology. After reading the first book by a fellow author, I wanted to craft a story set in the Bulwark universe. For extra fun, I gave a character from one of my previous books a history in this creepy town packed with paranormal events.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Some of the characters already existed from previous Bulwark books, though you can enjoy this installment without reading the others. The main character developed in a series I wrote, The Fear Chronicles. I never got a chance to tell her story until writing The Mission.

She parked to one side of the road and pulled on a black ball cap with the letters FBI. Her cover story was locked and loaded. She slid her gun into the holster within her suit jacket. With a deep breath, she climbed out of the SUV.
The first thing she noticed was the smell of decaying flesh. The second was the lack of sound. No engine noises, no calls from birds, and no more thunder. Still, the sky seemed ready to blast her at any moment.
Amber walked to the water. The surface was calm as glass with a green hue. A foot deep, maybe two. Depth was hard to tell with so many pits in the road. She inched the toes of her black boots closer. Her reflection stared back. No one could consider this green sludge water, more like sewage.
She’d seen this sludge before. A gloomy night flashed before her eyes. Lightning split the sky like a raging fire. The green goo surrounded her, called to her…
Amber.
After twenty years of fighting the memories, a warm sensation flooded her. No need to worry about this mission or ever leaving Bulwark again. No one at the agency would care if she didn’t return. She moved closer, sliding the tip of her boot forward until it almost touched—
“I wouldn’t do that.”
Amber snapped out of the trance and stumbled back from the sludge. A man dressed in a uniform stood next to her SUV. A gun hung in the holster at his hip. Even from this distance, Amber knew the man stood almost a foot taller than her. He was built solid with wide shoulders and large hands, one of them close to the gun.
Could this be the sheriff? A truck with Bulwark’s emblem on the driver’s door sat on the road behind the SUV. “Who are you?”
He approached where she stood at the edge of the water, taking his time as he walked. “Sheriff Clay Finnes. I could ask you the same question, but I’ve got an idea of how you’d respond.” The sheriff tipped his wide-brimmed hat and glanced at her badge. “Standing too close to the shores of Lake Bulwark is dangerous. Good thing you’re no tourist.”
“Lake Bulwark?”
“That’s what some of our residents nicknamed this heinous body of water. Comes and goes as it pleases. Was gone for several months and then two nights ago—”
“It reappeared,” she said.
“I assume you’re the agent come to investigate what happened to those girls.”
“Amber Dallas. Agent Dallas.” He didn’t have to know the title wasn’t official yet.
“I hear you might have roots here.”
She glanced behind her and took a few more steps away from the green sludge. “I left this town twenty years ago.” Short, simple. Maybe he wouldn’t push for more details this soon.

A Voice That Thunders (Voice that Thunders#1) by Cully Mack

Immortals conquering as gods. A Shadow creeping closer… Can an apprentice healer be the key to ignite a war?

Mirah looks for the best in everybody. But her naiveté is shattered when her clan is slaughtered, and she’s dragged into captivity. Vulnerable and scared, she has no choice but to accept her kidnappers’ offer to join their sect of lethal female fighters.

Desperate to find stability in her chaotic new life, Mirah throws herself into training as a water mage and warrior. But as she discovers her unprecedented elemental control, her instructor warns that revealing her power will put her in mortal danger.

With the fate of humanity at risk, will Mirah’s growing abilities spell her salvation… or destruction?

A Voice That Thunders is the first book in the action-packed Voice that Thunders epic fantasy series. If you like strong women, intricate world-building, and stories of enduring friendship, then you’ll adore Cully Mack’s riveting saga.

Targeted Age Group:: YA, Adult

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I had a character, and an idea running around in my head. Both refused to give me peace until I put words on the page.
I have always loved the fantasy genre, and I have a keen interest in mythology. I decided to merge the two and created the Voice that Thunders series. Myth absolutely fascinates me (the older the better- think pre Egyptian, Greek and Roman). Yes, those titans, gods and beastly monsters were known to older civilizations in Mesopotamia and I feature them in my books.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The first character I created was Ammo. I love writing cocky, confident males, which is why I have a few of them. Ammo is skilled at pretty much everything and a complete risk taker. He often makes me laugh with his cocky attitude and flirty banter. He wasn't the right personality to be my main protagonists so I created Gabe and Mirah, two siblings who are younger and have room to develop.
The characters drive my stories forward as they are subjected to trials, trauma, and temptations. Conflict always brings out a character's true nature!
I think most of all I love writing Tur. He is complex, comes across as aloof at first, but he is one hell of a man as his story develops.

She rushed for the hatch, but halfway towards it, her vision blurred, and dizziness sent her toppling over. Nate caught her as she fell. He carried her to his quarters and laid her on the bed. The sandalwood and cinnamon scent of him clung to his blanket. That she recognised it made her recoil into a place deep within.
‘What’s wrong?’ he asked, pouring her water.
Mirah rolled over and faced away from him.
‘Are you ill?’
‘Just go. Leave me alone.’
He hovered for a moment before the door creaked shut. Drawing her knees up into her chest, she rocked herself until she fell asleep.
Faceless gods and monsters chased her through her dreams. She kept running, faster and faster, never looking behind as they breathed the heat of their disgusting sickness on the nape of her neck. Exhaustion gripped her and then Nate was there. Would he save her? He snarled in her face. I was wondering how much you could take before you break. Her body recoiled at the sight of him, and she awoke.
Nate hadn’t left. He sat on the floor, leaning against the door with his arms resting on bent knees, concern written on his face. He’s such a good liar, she thought.
‘What’s happened?’ he asked.
‘Bad fruit.’
He didn’t believe her, and she didn’t care.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I discovered new herbal plants and teas growing in the mountain region. This inspired me to write about the different teas and Indian spices from around the world.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The Simple Uses of  Herbal teas and Indian Spices

Ajowan

Ajowan has the same flavor as thyme. You should crush this spice before using, a process of releasing the oils and the flavor.
A Blend used in toothpastes and cosmetics. Used as treatment for diarrhea, a home-made remedy for indigestion, colic, and has helped people for other ailments, especially, like the relief of asthma and arthritis.
A Plant found in the grounds of India; use three drops of oil ailments experienced.

Allspice

Allspice is a combination of spices from cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It has been mistaken for black pepper in Spain. A unique spice compared to other herbal spices.
The Allspice berries are grown in the rainforests of South and Central America where it grows wild of the evergreen tree.
This spice comes from Jamaica, with a well-suited climate and soil.  It was once used to cure meat in some parts of the world, as believed in the ancient times.

Amchur

Amchur is used in a form of powder from unripe dry mangoes, used with turmeric; the whole fruit can be sliced and dried in open spaced areas with direct sunlight. The mango tree is grown in India, and is one of the oldest trees to be cultivated for its fruit; it has spread to most parts of the world including South Africa.
A tree that prefers tropical climates is a family of the cashew and pistachio nut.
The mango is popular in many foods, now used in chutneys, or pickles and has an acidic taste. It is  mostly used in Indian cooking for flavoring curries, and soups, is beige in color when in powder form and with a tangy taste.
A taste of satisfaction for grilled foods can be used as a marinade and in most cuisines. In Asian regions the Amchur spice is used as a dye, it was some time ago, the leaves of the mango tree were fed to cows and afterward their urine was used as a yellow dye. Many traditional methods were used for herbs and spices centuries ago. While still green this fleshy fruit is sometimes eaten with curry powder and salt, by most Indians. Add Amchur powder to your required taste.

Angelica Plant

Angelica was first grown in the Northern part of Europe, but was only recognized much later. Thousands of years ago it was used to protect the young from evil. Tobacco was made from the fresh preserved roots and used as snuff to the American Indians.  It was discovered in the early times that Angelica was used by Virginian Indians for their beliefs.
Fennel, parsley, chervil, carrots and parsnips, are also perennial plants. Angelica has green to white flowers. It has leaf stalks like celery, and grows in damp areas.
All the parts of this herb are eaten.  The roots and stems contain an essential oil that has a licorice flavor which is used for perfumery, the leaf stalks which look like celery are sometimes used as a vegetable, the seeds are used in cookies and sweets, and the stems can be candied and used in cake decorating.

The young leaves are added to fruit or leaf salads. The small flowers are good in fruit salads and cream cheeses, because it reduces acidity, used in orange marmalade, sorbets and fruit syrups.  An herb not easily found.
The herbal spice is used for increasing a person's appetite; the tea is made from its leaves which is used for the calming of the nerves and is a healing herb for digestion.
When handling the plant, gloves are required to protect your hands and under no circumstances should pregnant women and anyone who is diabetic use this spice.
If the seeds and the stem are used in small amounts, it is safe for an individual, but excessive use of fresh roots is poisonous.

It is important to note that the Japanese Star Anise is not the same herb, it is poisonous.

But one weekend is about to change everything. And if Alex and Jasper aren’t careful, murder and intrigue won’t be the only things crashing the royal party … It just might be love.

Targeted Age Group:: 18+

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
It is Michael Bolton's song, On My Feet Again. But then the story grew and not about what is said in the lyrics at all.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I guess I was inspired by the romance royal movies I watched. In my story, it is between man and man as it is a gay romance.

Alex headed down to the front hall and eyed Geoff there looking at the paintings hanging on the wall. A bag sat on the floor by the door, and a fleeting thought crossed Alex’s mind. How remiss Jimmy was to forget to take it to one of the rooms upstairs. Alex turned his attention back to Geoff and how he exuded high self-confidence. Alex had never had a problem with his own self-confidence before and hated the way he felt right now. But he was only a writer, and his parents kept talking about The Great Geoff Addingsworth and his successful company and how Alex should have been like that—making good use of his engineering education instead of hiding his head in the clouds and daydreaming all day and night.

Alex cleared his throat, and Geoff swung around in a rather shocked way. It seemed that he’d not been the only one lost in thought.

“Hey, Geoff, how are you? You look fabulous.”

For a moment Geoff looked guarded, but then he seemed to overcome himself and showered Alex with his wide, dimpled smile.

“Alex, my favorite cousin. How’s our great author?”

Alex felt himself blush, which didn’t happen often, thank you very much.

“Shut it, Geoff. I’m not great or anything.”

“Oh, come on. Three books on Amazon’s bestseller lists, that’s not great? Don’t sell yourself short, Alex.”

“Yeah, try telling my parents that.”

Geoff went serious all of a sudden. “I heard that about your parents. You hang in there, cousin. You know you have me if you need anything.”

Alex shifted uneasily. “I’m fine. Uh, why don’t we go to the sitting room?” he asked, hoping Gabe would appear soon. He was the host, for Christ’s sake, not Alex. Alex would just take Geoff there and excuse himself.

“Sure,” Geoff said. He made to take his bag, but Alex stopped him.

“Jimmy will help you with that.”

Geoff offered him a polite smile and left the bag.

In the library Alex asked Geoff if he wanted some tea and scones. They sat there enjoying their little snacks quietly; neither had anything else to say now that they were finished with greeting and compliments for each other.

But it wasn’t like Alex to stay quiet for long.

“Hey, how is your family? You have a boy, right?”

Geoff was clearly relieved to finally have something to say.

“No. A girl. Our little daughter, Iola. Olivia and I are very proud of her.”

“What a pretty name. She must be very sweet. How old is she now?”

“Just four, going on five.”

“Ah.” Alex nodded. “And you’re now, like, forty, forty something, right? A late baby, I presume?” Alex felt like smacking himself. Did he sound like an old nosy or what? “Sorry, you don’t have to answer that.” But Geoff only laughed—open and loud—and made Alex huff in relief.

“That’s okay. It’s my own fault, right? But then I only met Olivia late. We fell in love immediately.”

“Yeah.” Alex nodded in agreement. “She is a lovely lady. Lucky you, cousin.”

“I know I am. I don’t know what I’d have done without her.” A cloud swept over Geoff’s handsome face, but it was gone before Alex was sure he really saw it. It made him wonder if something had happened. All right, enough with this being curious thing, Alex scolded himself.

“But I hear you didn’t fare bad yourself.”

“Heh, yeah.” Alex ducked his head. It was not cool when he was supposed to be proud and excited about his fiancée, when in fact the face that went around in his head belonged to Jasper. Alex had tasted Jasper’s lips and now wanted more. He could still remember those brilliant eyes, beautiful though they stared at him rather coldly. “H-Hermione is so cute. Love her.” Great. He’d almost said he.

“When did you two meet?” Geoff asked, the question almost making Alex stutter. When had they met again?

Sounds of long footsteps distracted them both. Alex turned to see Gabe stride toward Geoff, opening his arms wide. Jimmy trailed behind him.

“Cousin Geoff. Welcome to Darlington.” The two hugged and shook each other’s hands under Alex’s and Jimmy’s gaze. “How are you doing? It’s so good to see you again. It’s been so long,” Gabe said, looking determined to keep his attention only on Geoff and deliberately ignoring Alex.

Alex shrugged to himself. Gabe was always such a drama queen. Alex glanced at Jimmy, who lifted an eyebrow in a questioning manner, and he shook his head a little. He knew when he was not wanted somewhere. He cleared his throat.

“Well, I’ll leave you two here. Jimmy, can you help with Geoff’s bag?” Alex headed to the wide entrance leading out of the sitting room.

“He took care of it,” Gabe replied on behalf of Jimmy, still not looking at Alex.

“All right.” He nodded to Geoff. “See you at the dinner, Geoff.” Without waiting for a response, he walked off. He heard someone trailing after him in small jogs.

“Alex, wait.”

“What?” But he didn’t stop.

Barefoot Alice by Jan Porter

“Barefoot Alice” is a heart-warming tale of one woman’s journey of loves, lost and found, of discovering ancestral ties and the magical interconnection with life.
Dumped by her husband and homeless, middle aged Alice finds herself at the Rail Stop Café in a northern gold mining ghost town during a snowstorm.
Surrounded by wilderness and a strange community at Golden Lake, Alice finds shelter in a 200-year-old schoolhouse with its ethereal teacher and students. Facing the inevitability of a life alone, she unravels legacy secrets with the help of a kindly old man, the community around and a mysterious wilderness man. She encounters descendants of Dr. Barnardo’s British Home Children, gold rush fever, an unconsecrated baby burial, ghost hunting tourists and infringing upscale cottage estates.
Befriended by the old schoolhouse ghosts and community, Alice is challenged to survive and overcome a lonely life.
Alice’s heartwarming journey celebrates the life-affirming qualities of resilience, the importance of community; of this world and spirit world, and the power of love to change lives.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I once lived in a 200 year old schoolhouse in northern Ontario, an area rich in anecdotal history.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I wanted to write about single middle-aged women who overcome personal and social issues, such as; loneliness, body image and shaming, divorce and friendships. In this book, Alice was orphaned as a child and as a lonely plus size woman, finds her sass and a sense of belonging through new friendships.

Sleepy, grateful and happy-proud that she had taken two normal adult steps today and hopeful that maybe everything was going to be okay, Alice relaxed. Ears listened to the wind pick up to disturb the calm. Through the window, shadows of large trees gently swayed. A stunning full moon peeked through clouds as snow glittered blue under expansive night stars. Alice had never seen anything like it, the city was always lit in an orangey yellow glow at night. Deliciously drifting off to sleep, she had become used to the strange ghostly noises inside of the house and it’s creaking in the winds.
After the legal, banking and bill paying bits were attended to, she would figure out who the ghost people were that co-habited the old schoolhouse and explore the countryside. Yes, it was almost time to find out exactly where she had moved to.
SCREEEEEEECHHHHHHHHH … SCREEEEEEECCCCHHHHHH! … SCREEEEEEEEEECHHHHH!
Alice bolted upright with heart pounding in chest and ears perked. “Jesus, what the heck is that?”
SCREEEEEEEEEECCCHHHH
What sounded like something being killed by insane murderer or someone screaming in a horror movie, was not coming from inside of the house. It was not the normal sounds from the ghosts occupying the house but, coming from right outside of the bedroom window.
Terrified, Alice slid off the bed and onto the floor and hid under the bed. Pulling a blanket off the bed, she covered her head. A pounding heart threatened to pop right out of her chest. She sobbed, “Oh God, please help me.”
SCCCCRRRREEEEEECCCH
Thinking fast, she crawled across the floor, turned out the light and felt around for a weapon to defend herself from the poltergeist trying to get in. Finding nothing, she crawled back under the bed, hoping whatever monster or madman was out there, would not see her through the window or break into the house. The next screeeeeccchhhhhing sound seemed a bit further away and was met with playful yip barking sounds. Ears tuning in and hearing nothing more, she calmed, yet still frozen in a fetal position under the bed. Alice fell asleep curled where she lay. Jerk had remained contentedly curled asleep on top of the bed. Why did Jerk seem unfazed? Had it not heard the terrible screech?
“God, what a jerk.”

Early the next morning, Alice boldly ventured outside, around the house and studied the back wall of her bedroom, expecting to see blood, a dead body or some other unfathomable horror. Seeing nothing of the kind, merely tiny paw prints, she ventured back inside, somewhat perplexed. As she moved past a bookcase, a book dropped off the shelf and landed at her feet. “Northern Ontario Wildlife.” Looking around, sensing no wind to have blown the book off the shelf, nor was Jerk anywhere to be seen, she understood the ghost’s suggestion. Alice settled into the easy chair and flipped through the pages.
Page 49; ‘The distinct mating call of the Vixen Fox, while not scientific, can best be described as that of a haunting murderous scream. Often a chilling sound for humans, this screeching sound is a loving mating call from the female fox to a male counterpart.’ The chapter went on to show photographs, food preferences and paw prints.
“Well, what do you know Rabbit, how about that. I believe we had a fox romance going on in our backyard!”
Closing the book and laying it gently on the side table for further learning later, Alice stood, stretched and then glanced out of a window at the easing storm.
A change must be made, and she knew if not taking the time and purchase the right weapon for the job, the mice would overtake the house. Each night the mice waited until lights were off, to exit walls to freely scurry in and out of cupboards, re-build nests and feast on countertop crumbs. Each day she cleaned bread crumbs, turds and pee only to find more the following morning. Standing with hand on hip, and with brows furrowed, she studied yesterday’s fresh bar of hand soap. Three quarters were gone, with teeth and tiny claw marks left on it as evidence. Either today was their last day, or she would have to call Bill Callaghan the Realtor and promptly leave.
Haunting children and adult ghosts seemed friendly. The mice, however, were another matter and could not be tolerated. Images of the house condemned because of mice and disease plague, repulsed her. It had taken a full day to clean the bathroom, yet the next day, the top cupboard displayed a massive toilet paper nest and the bottom shelf had become a toothpaste mishmash of rodent pee and tiny black poop pellets.
Alice stood in front of Rabbit, “Well, I can’t risk going all of the way to Williamsford today, it looks like more heavy snow on the way. What should I do? Jerk is catching some of these mice, but each time I clean up, I wake up to more mouse destruction and poop. We’ve got to do something, Rabbit. Hmm . . ., oh ya, you’re right. There is a General Store up the road. I guess it’s time to go see what it has. I hope they have a phone book and a phone I can use. Maybe they even have a banking kiosk and I can see if I can take some money out.” Alice turned to review the local map.
Bounding over a snowbank out of the driveway and sliding out onto the county road, freshly plowed, and still snow packed, she swerved slightly. Letting off gas to adjust to the snow packed fresh sand and salt, the tires gripped. With one hand on the steering wheel, the other madly swiped frost covering the inside of the windshield. The old pickup truck chugged along contently.
Expecting to find a century old, run down creepy old place for a general store, Alice veered around a bend to meet a beautiful large log building, the kind you would expect to see in the Yukon or Alaska. On the deck lay piles of ice salt bags, newspaper bins, a block ice bin, luxurious Adirondack cottage chairs and a wooden two-person swing chair.

High, Wide, and Handsome – An American Journey by Julian Bishop

British-born US resident, Julian Bishop, is at an inflection point. His children have left home, and he and his wife must figure out what they want to do next. They travel coast-to-coast across the USA and explore whether they truly want to be American.

High, Wide, and Handsome is an extremely witty travel book that seeks to understand American culture. It explores why the USA has been so successful since independence and also identifies some issues that should be addressed. In a world where America’s political leaders are widely ridiculed, the book acts as an antidote to the narrative that everything American is broken. It is an essential read for anybody interested in America.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was sitting at an outside table in a small-town cafe in Idaho. The sun was shining, people were courteous, and everyone was getting on with their life. Everything seemed perfect. I returned my gaze to my BBC News App to read an article about how ignorant Americans were and how bad things were in the USA. The disconnect gave me the idea to write an antidote to the narrative that everything in America is broken.

We planned to spend most of the day in Theodore Roosevelt’s National Park. It is divided into two main units seventy miles apart: North and South. Confusingly, even though they are at the same longitude, they are in different time zones. By longitude, most of North Dakota should logically be in Mountain Time. However, in the late nineteenth century, the railroads lobbied North Dakota to make their timetables less confusing to their customers. Accordingly, the part of the state that they operated in was decreed to be in Central Time Zone, and the other areas in which they did not have tracks would remain in Mountain Time. Twelve other US states are also in more than one time zone.

We arrived in the lesser-visited North Unit at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning and, for the first couple of hours, were one of only three cars in the park. The other two vehicles were occupied by park rangers. The emptiness was surprising because the entire park usually has 0.7 million visitors every year. The visitor center was closed, and nobody was collecting park fees.

This park had one winding road which followed the land’s contours avoiding the many canyons. The vistas, largely unpunctuated by trees, were of impressive canyons, albeit much smaller than those further in the West. The (not so) Little Missouri River meandered through both the North and South Units.

One of the park’s great attractions is the bison or buffalo, as they are popularly known here. What is the difference between a buffalo and a bison? Almost everyone from the UK knows that the answer to this question is that you can’t wash your hands in a Buffalo. In the USA, however, this joke doesn’t work so well because one typically washes one’s hands in a sink. In the UK, the British call the porcelain receptacle in which you wash your hands, a basin. This sounds a bit like bison if you say it in a cockney accent.

Buffalo and bison are different species, albeit from the same animal family. Contrary to the song Home on The Range, buffalo do not roam in the American West. They roam in Africa and Asia. It’s bison that roam in parts of the American West, but it just doesn’t scan as well. William Cody, who was said to have shot five thousand bison for Kansas Pacific Railroad, should surely have been called Bison Bill. To emphasize or labor the point further, the Latin name for the American Plains Bison is bison bison bison. Nothing about Buffalo at all.
The park itself knows that these animals should be called bison but has to use the word buffalo in the warning signs so that Americans know to what they are referring. A recent newspaper article was titled “Bison gores teen in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.” It was accompanied by an image of a bison, whose picture title read “Buffalo.”

Fellow sometime-travel writer, Bill Bryson, is almost perfectly named. However, if he were more American and slightly less British, he would probably be called Bill Bruffalo.

As a genuinely wild aside, linguist Dimitri Borgmann constructed a famous American sentence in 1967. It has eight consecutive buffalos and is grammatically correct. To make sense of this sentence, you need to know that Buffalo is a city in New York State; that there is a rare verb “to buffalo,” which means “to bully”; and that – contrary to the second sentence of this paragraph – the plural of buffalo is indeed buffalo. You also should be aware that the restrictive clause of the third to fifth buffalo requires no commas. Therefore, the sentence reads, “Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.” …spellchecker breaks down, and the reader loses the will to live. This translates more simply as “Buffalo bison, that other Buffalo bison bully, also bully Buffalo bison.” It has to be admitted that I have rarely had the cause to use this sentence in everyday speech, possibly because I know that the animals should be called bison, and the only bison in Buffalo are found at the Buffalo Zoo.

Why all this stuff about buffalo and bison, I hear you ask? This park has several hundred bison. We did the usual thing of taking photos of bison herds three hundred feet away or more. Later as we drove down the park road, a one-ton male bison trudged excessively slowly, one step every four seconds right past our stopped car. We even have a video of it, complete with Lorna screaming at me to shut the window. Exactly how the six-foot-tall bison would enter our car by the window isn’t recorded. He trudged peacefully, but very closely, past our car, not looking at us once. About a month before our visit, a bison charged at a woman walking in the park. It knocked her down, breaking her vertebrae and facial bones. She called 911 while on the ground, and a Park Ranger had to shoot the bison to protect the injured hiker.

Pre-colonization, bison were plentiful. The Great Plains alone were thought to have around sixty million. In the nineteenth century, bison began to be prized for their meat, hides, and bones, which were used for refining sugar and making china. Peak bison slaughter was in the 1870s when the USA experienced heavy industrialization. One railway engineer said that it was possible to walk a hundred miles along the railroad between Kansas and New Mexico without touching the ground by stepping from one carcass to another. By the end of the nineteenth century, the bison was almost extinct.

Many Americans at the time thought extinction was a good thing. The empty prairies made it easier to build towns and railroads. Some US military leaders felt that near extinction was a “triumph of civilization over savagery” because the absence of bison deprived Native Americans of their food source, making it easier to relocate them to their reservations. Not that there were too many Native Americans remaining by the end of the nineteenth century. The Native American population likely fell to less than one-quarter of a million.

Fortunately, not everyone agreed. Our friend, Theodore Roosevelt, was one of a group of wealthy philanthropists who arranged for fifteen bison from the Bronx zoo to be sent by train to Oklahoma to repopulate the bison herds. Some Comanche met the train; the children from the tribe marveled at their first sight of a bison. I am pleased to report that America is today home to around half a million bison and that, in 2016, the bison was named the USA’s official national mammal.
