Happy Fall!
We're currently being bombarded with fall-themed advertising and even Halloween decorations (too
soon!) but it'll be summer weather here for at least another month.
You may have noticed that I didn't bring out a newsletter last month. It's always a tricky balance between keeping in touch and having something to say. A while back, I determined not to publish bad reviews of books. The whole point of this newsletter is to recommend books!
Trying to work on my own novels, along with family obligations and freelance work, means I just don't have time to waste finishing books I don't enjoy.
If I don't like a book enough to finish it, or I can't talk about some positive qualities in the story or the craft, I just won't say anything at all.
But this month, I do have some treats for you!
1) A fun and somewhat controversial article from the mystery-review blog " The Passing Tramp," on the supposed "laws" of mystery fiction. I agree with some, but not all of them. You can read my own take on the trends in "rules" for mysteries on my blog. Who do you agree with? Or do you have a completely different view?
2) A review
of Vanishing Point by Patricia Wentworth, a prolific but lesser-known author from the Golden Age.
3) An interview with a lovely FOM (Friend of Mottley), Billie Jenrette at Murder She Sends. She created the prize box for my launch of Dying Fall, and is a great inspiration for putting your heart into your work.
Enjoy!

PS: I hope
you find this newsletter fun and useful. But if it's not a good fit for you anymore, you can unsubscribe any time.

Still waters run deep.
That's the theme of this classic English country-house mystery. The village of Hazel Green is as peaceful on the surface
as a woodland pond. But over the years, a series of disappearances create disturbing ripples

know. DISCOUNTS & SPECIAL FEATURES Feed your book craving with these great deals.
Murder on the SS Rosa by Lee Strauss
|
This first-in-series historical cozy is new to me, but it looks absolutely charming. Lee Strauss has a couple of different mystery series out, and offers the 7 Ginger Gold books as clean, cozy reads.
It's 1923 and young war widow fashionista Ginger Gold makes a cross-Atlantic journey with her companion Haley Higgins to London, England, to settle her father's estate. When the ship's captain is found dead,
Ginger is only too happy to lend her assistance to the handsome Chief Inspector Basil Reed.
Readers on Amazon give Murder on the SS Rosa an average rating of four stars plus, and it's currently 99 cents on Kindle (or free with Kindle Unlimited.) You can grab it here.
Have you read it? Let me know what you think! I'm always happy to publish reader reviews of my recommendations.
