Phase 1 Update : Phase 2 Plans

Phase 1 of the Women's Bucket Brigade has completed its 19th distribution with over 2,000 buckets delivered along with disinfectant supplies and also rice to some families.The virus is still raging in nearby countries. While the news from Liberia regarding Ebola is improving, we've learned that new outbreaks in isolated villages are still occurring. Much work remains to eradicate this threat. As Phase 1 nears completion we are working on next steps.

Women's Bucket Brigade Phase 2: Expand the Firebreak, has been designed, plans are complete and grant acquisition and fundraising is underway...

COMFORT WOMEN

As I skimmed through the newspaper, the face of a beautiful woman captured my attention.

The woman was probably in her late eighties. There was something mesmerizing about the years of living that was etched in her face and the look in her eyes.

I read that her name was Emah and that she was one of the women that Jan Banning photographed for an art exhibition called the “comfort women. ” The name originated during World War II when the Japanese forced tens of thousands of women into sexual slavery.

We have been involved in the fight against Ebola since late summer. The impact of this horrible virus has taken a reported total of over 4800 lives as of the beginning of November.

The good news is that the current number of new cases in Liberia seems to be drastically decreasing. Even as I write this I’m aware of news that the virus continues to surge in Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Until there are zero new cases in the entire affected region for a period of twenty-one days the threat continues.

Even so, we want to celebrate the victories in this strange battle and in Liberia, at this time, we are definitely seeing reason to cautiously celebrate.

There are some Ebola Treatment Units that were once overflowing with the stricken which are now sitting mostly empty. This is a reason to be thankful indeed.

So as we look at the situation today what ought to be our focus?...
