Fifty Shades of Abuse

Call me judgmental or call me uninformed, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why women are willing to buy the book, Fifty Shades of Grey and are now flocking to the movie.

No, I have not read the book or saw the movie nor do I intend to. However, I couldn’t help but get the gist of what it was about after all of the buzz that has surrounded it over the last year. I decided before I shared my viewpoint that I should read some of the book and movie reviews. For the most part, the comments were not kind and ranged from the book being poorly written to the potential danger of the book and movie glamorizing violence and abuse...

Empowering Women Matters

Right now in the Developing World there are women who are considered property to be sold, borrowed, and used. There are women who are not permitted to leave their homes without a male escort, and to disobey could bring swift and harsh punishment. There are women who, if they are raped, are considered damaged goods and one who has brought dishonor on their families.

There are many women and girls in parts of our world everyday who face the danger of being raped just for trying to find a safe place to “go to the bathroom” when there are no bathrooms. There are girls who attend school but are told if they want to pass a class they have to have sex with a teacher.

The particular realities that any woman in the Developing World faces depends on which culture she lives under, but the common ground all these women share is that they know suffering. This kind of suffering has to be acknowledged and the suffering must stop...
