Money Saver Spain Newsletter
3 September 2015
Post Holiday Blues?

Welcome back after the break and a big hello to all the new subscribers.

I hope everyone managed to rest during the summer. As for myself I had a staycation this year in sunny Madrid and in mid August I had hand surgery (this newsletter has been typed by a friend - please excuse any typos!).

Many thanks to everyone who took part in our survey in July, hopefully I’ll be able to incorporate some of the suggestions in the upcoming weeks.

What can we expect in September? By the look of the window displays in many Spanish stores, you’d think that winter was just round the corner with boots, coats and thick jumpers on sale. But on the plus side, we won’t have to suffer anything in stores to do with Xmas until at least November.

Here’s our round up of the latest consumer news, promos and offers in Spain. Don’t forget to check out a great freebie near the end of the newsletter.
Consumer News
Assets abroad: If you have assets abroad worth over 50,000€ and haven’t declared them on form 720, watch out as the Spanish Tax Office is applying disproportional fines. Why is this? Undeclared assets abroad are being classed as an unjustified increase in personal wealth and, as such, are taxed at a higher rate (up to 56%) and are also subject to a fine of 150%. In one case a person with assets worth 340,000€ has been fined 439,000€! (Data taken from Consumer Org. OCU).

Cars: Euro 6 came into force on 1 Sep. If you don’t know what Euro 6 is, it’s a new regulation regarding the level of harmful emissions and is applied to new cars sold from this month. Manufacturers says this comes at a cost – an average of 500€ extra per vehicle.

More cars: New car sales were up 23% in August compared with the same month last year with VW at the top of the sales table. During 2015 the top seller overall is the Citroen C4. Don’t forget that Plan PIVE grants are still available.

Bank accounts: Beware if you have a dormant account in Spain that’s subject to regular charges (commission). Once the money in the account has been used up by the charges, the account will go in the red, which means you’ll owe the bank money as interest is applied to an unauthorised overdraft. The Bank of Spain does not agree with this practice, but banks continue to do it. Conclusion: never leave an account dormant, always close it and make sure you have the paperwork to prove it.

Fibre Optic: To date Orange was the only company that didn’t have a 300 MB broadband package, but now they’ve launched their service with symmetric speed (30 / 100 / 300 MB). What does this mean for the consumer? You’ll be able to upload at the same speed as download, good news if you like to post videos online.

Fines: From this summer, if you’re fined in any EU country for any of the following traffic offences you’ll receive the notification at your registered address:
  • Speeding
  • Not wearing a seat belt
  • Jumping a red light
  • Driving under the influence of drink or drugs
  • Motorbike users not wearing a helmet
  • Using a prohibited lane
  • Using a mobile phone
Use the EU’s free GoingAbroad app to check local traffic laws
