Money Saver Spain Newsletter
1 October 2015
When is a free TV not a free TV?

Have you heard the news? Movistar will give away a free TV for anyone contracting their TV package during the upcoming 2015 Christmas promo!

Well, it turns out that the TV will be configured so you can only watch Movistar TV. And, to make things worse, it’s just like the router that comes with your internet package: the TV is loaned, so it’s not even yours.

With this TV/monitor you won’t be able to watch Netflix or Filmin (or from what we’ve read anything except Movistar TV channels). For those who still think it’s an interesting option, you can choose from 3 different screen sizes but remember: when you cancel your contract or change provider the TV has to be returned.
Consumer News
Lower IBI tax: Pending final approval for the 2016 Budget are reductions on the IBI tax for energy efficient homes. The law will allow Ayuntamientos to reduce the tax by up to:
  • 20% for A rated properties
  • 16% for B rated
  • 12% for C rated
  • 8% for D rated
  • 4% for E rated
Neither F nor G rated properties will get a discount (or those that don’t have an energy certificate). Note that the magic words are “up to”, so Ayuntamientos will be able to decide how much discount to apply.

The 2€ ATM charge: A draft order is being put together regarding removing the double charging of clients for using an ATM in Spain (see our article from last week’s newsletter). There’s still some liaising necessary between the Ministry of Economy, the Bank of Spain and other bodies before it will be approved, so let’s see how long that takes…

VW fallout: More car brands have been brought into the emissions scandal, with Audi, Seat and Skoda (all part of the same group) admitting manipulating the emissions on many models by the use of software.

New electric bills: Today (finally!) the new electric bill comes into force that charges based on the hourly rate of electricity. You’ll only notice the difference if you have a smart meter AND the PVPC (previous TUR) regulated tariff; estimates show that around 6 million households will be affected. The deadline for installation of smart meters nationwide is Jan 2018.

You can get quicker deliveries with Amazon Premium, in Spain it’s only 19.95€/year and you can get a 30 day free trial period. What about Amazon supermarket prices? Well, based on my own quick unofficial price comparison they seem very competitive.
