Money Saver Spain Newsletter
5 November 2015
Remember, Remember the 27th of November!

October has finished, Halloween is over and now my inbox is being bombarded with Christmas offers.
But before that Black Friday will be held on the 27th of this month and Cyber Monday on the 30th. Spain has adopted yet another tradition and there will be heavy promotion by stores to get you to part with your hard-earned cash. You can read more about it in our updated post.

Consumer News
Roaming charges in Europe: After delays and concerns about the final approval of a ban on roaming charges for mobile phones in Europe, this has finally happened and the date set is mid-2017. But (there’s always a but!) there are loopholes - frequent travellers may have only limited free roaming rights.
Dishonest meat labelling: We rely on labels to make choices when shopping, but a new European consumer report on meat labels highlights some of the deceptive practices manufacturers and stores use.

Car emissions: If you expected that the EU would take advantage of the VW scandal to impose stricter emissions criteria, well it hasn’t turned out like that. The original proposal by the EU Commission that emissions could exceed lab test values by 60% on the road, down to 20% in the future, have finally been set at 110% on the road with a reduction to 50% in the future. Conclusion: Industry lobbies have more power than the EU and the consumer.

Medicines: The Spanish Monopolies Commission is studying the possibility of allowing any establishment (physical store or online) in Spain to sell medicines that do not require a prescription. Several countries already allow the sale of products such as ibuprofen or aspirin to be sold in supermarkets and online, however there is still some resistance to change by consumer orgs in Spain.

Cheapest supermarkets. Once again Spanish consumer org OCU has published the list of the cheapest supermarkets in Spain. Dani is the cheapest, Alcampo is in 5th place and Mercadona ties with Carrefour in 9th place.
