Elder Abuse Bytes E-Newsletter
Winter Edition

The NCEA team wishes to express its gratitude to the public, our community partners, advisors, and supporters who help make our work possible.  We remain committed to the pursuit of elder justice and abuse prevention through our continuing and coordinated efforts to strengthen supports and services throughout the older adult community.

NCEA and FrameWorks Institute

Elder Abuse PSA

The NCEA has created two Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos in collaboration with the Frameworks Institute to promote elder justice. The videos emphasize how strengthening social supports and structures through policies and programs dedicated to serving older adults can prevent and address elder abuse.

You can access our short form video here.  A longer version of the PSA can be viewed here.

NCEA Workshops

Over the past few months, the NCEA has conducted workshops to reframe elder justice issues and prevent elder abuse.  Trainings have taken place in Irvine, CA and Milwaukee, WI. More workshops are planned for the NASW conference in Washington, DC in June, and at the annual NAPSA conference in Anaheim, CA in August. In addition, at the upcoming Aging in America conference the NCEA will be hosting a resource table and providing FREE editing assistance for elder abuse public awareness materials.

Reframing Aging

In an ongoing effort to facilitate strategies to communicate more effectively about aging as a social policy issue, FrameWorks Institute has introduced a free video lecture series, which can be accessed by registering here.

Reports and Legislation

Eldercare Locator Research Report

Based upon 2016 data culled from more than 300,000 calls, email requests and online chats, Making Connections: Consumer Needs in an Aging America, identifies and quantifies primary consumer concerns, including transportation, caregiver services, and home-based support.  Nearly 7000 calls were elder abuse-related requests for referrals to reporting authorities and critical resources.  The report is available here.

Grantmakers in Aging

HEARTACHE, PAIN, AND HOPE: Rural Communities, Older People, and the Opioid Crisis,  details the mounting impact of the opioid epidemic on rural older adults, family members and communities. Researchers found a causal connection between increased incidents of elder abuse and exploitation, and opioid addiction.  The report noted, “as more adult children with addiction problems are moving back in with their parents, the older people can become easy targets for financial, physical, and emotional abuse.”  You can find the report here.

The Senior Safe Act

The Senior Safe Act offers financial service representatives, who expose scams to defraud older adults, protection from civil liability.  Introduced by the House of Representatives on November 28th as part of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act, the bill is pending Congressional approval.

NCEA Presence at 2017 National Conferences

The Consumer Voice

At its annual conference in Arlington, VA in November, the National Consumer Voice for Long-Term Care addressed upcoming changes in the federal nursing home regulatory requirements and the quality of long-term care 30 years after passage of the Nursing Home Reform Law.  The event featured a keynote address from Lance Robertson, Administrator of the Administration for Community Living/Assistant Secretary, Administration on Aging.

The Consumer Voice Issue Brief on Key Issues in Long-term Care is available here.

California District Attorneys Association

The National Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Symposium, held in late November in Anaheim, CA, provided attendees with critical information relating to the identification, investigation, and prosecution of elder and dependent abuse cases.  Topics included prevailing legislative policies, practice issues and technical advances in elder abuse detection.
