What does it take to become a better painter? I mean besides painting as often as you can and applying yourself? What it takes is a commitment to embrace a daily artful life.
You don’t need to make a huge project out of this practice. A
simple daily doodle or sketch will do. Looking at and reading about art. Spending time REALLY looking around your environment. Admiring the turn of a petal, the dappled light through the leaves on a tree. Taking photos…
Just sitting quietly while tuning in to the sounds and sensations
around you can be an inspiration. Can you hear the rustling of leaves in the woods and the distant sound of a dog barking? When you close your eyes, do you smell the damp earth at your feet and feel the breeze on your skin?
Paying attention is an artist’s daily practice. By truly paying
attention you are stimulated and with that comes inspiration.
To become a better artist, we need inspiration. And that can come
from the simplest observations and tiniest daily practices. Take the time to put pencil to paper and just make some marks. You’ll be so amazed by what can flow from your imagination and onto paper.
Don’t try to do everything perfectly, it will cripple your
creativity. Don’t just copy someone else’s style. Don’t be afraid of your uniqueness and authenticity. Just make a little bit of art everyday. Not only will you be a better artist, but it will bring joy into your life!
