Together

TL;DR

Some companies have already opened their offices again. Some are in the process of doing it. I have an important message for anyone going back to the office.

Don't just come back to the office. Make it special. Create a fun, bonding event around your coming together. Hold a workshop by inviting trainers, coaches, and facilitators from outside your company. Create lots of space for communication, for eye contact, for smiles. Create space for the problems too, but for once outside of email or slack.

The pandemic broke our ties, socially distanced us, and forced us to collaborate remotely. But a healthy society is made of strong individuals connected by strong ties. Healthy teams are at the core of a healthy society. That's why you need team building events now.

I know because I witnessed the creation of a healthy team in front of my eyes.

Two weeks ago I led an actual workshop. In person! Four employees of a big bank meeting in the office for the first time. I thought our day would be all about presentations and public speaking. At least, that's what they wanted originally.

In reality, the team needed communication. What did I do as a coach?

I created a safe space for them to talk about work, to reveal who they are, and to talk candidly about problems within their team and organization.

They loved being able to see each other’s reactions. They enjoyed looking into the eyes of each other. They rejoiced in understanding that they all felt the same about certain issues.

Eventually, we came to the theme of speaking in public, but my pride with this group is that I facilitated their first post-pandemic get-together. Our workshop was as much about team building as it was about public speaking.

This happened at the same time I was working on the concept of team building during and after the pandemic with my brother from another mother Tommaso Lana.

This article summarizes our thinking about this urgent topic. Don't just go back to the office, go back to teamwork. With a team building event.
