But WHY?! It's all the same information every year, right? A big brick of a comic book price guide, filled with (mostly) irrelevant prices that are long out of date by the time the thing is published.

Well. Yes and no. Just like Bart Simpson saying "Sushi is just raw fish", there is an element of truth in common conceptions, but the bigger picture is far more interesting.

My investment of $20 or so in Overstreet 46 paid for itself in just five minutes. Read on to find out how!

What You Need to Profit From Overstreet

First, you're going to need a buy list. I began my buy list four years ago. It's simply a spreadsheet:

An example of my buy list for comic books. This was built using Overstreet Market Reports

Whenever somebody tips a book to either increase in value, or highlights it as a book that's "broken out" due to movie or TV rumors, etc, I add it to my sheet.

This can be the Internet, with hundreds of sites I trawl through once every month or so, or just a news announcement on TV or radio. Anything. I follow it up by researching prices of actual sales on eBay.

Some don't make the cut. I've either missed the boat, or they were never really worthy of a spot on the list in the first place.

A buy list is a living thing. You need to maintain it.

Now, when Overstreet arrives...

The First Thing I Do Every Year

I turn immediately to the Market Reports by the Overstreet advisors. These are GOLD just waiting to be mined!

The advisors are collectors, dealers and auction companies who have first-hand, cutting-edge experience of what the market is doing.

(I do too, and it's my ambition to become an advisor ASAP.)

Every tip they mention is checked against my buy list. If it's already there, I leave it alone. If it's not, I add it.

In four years, I have built a buy list of over 500 key or semi-key issues. That is so valuable. It's literally the foundation of our business!

Don't Treat Your Overstreet Like It's a Library Book...

I know your parents and teachers always drilled into you how important it was to keep your books in good condition.

Guess what? That's BS. Look at how I treat MY copy every year!

I use red pen, so it stands out. I do a quick walk through all the reports, marking in red any tips I am not familiar with, then go back to the beginning with my buy list open and start working on it.

I suggest you do the same. You're leaving money on the dealer tables at comic conventions, and missing garage sale bargains, if you don't!
