In my opinion, there are several skills that come
handy in acquiring a significantly higher salary but here are the 4 that I think are the most importants:
- be an expert in a field that is preferably in high-demand and increase your value for the enterprise.
Document facts that demonstrate it and remember that management understand money when it is time to discuss with them.
- be good at marketing your achievements. If noone knows that you are great, not much will happen. This will also make your services in demand which will push higher the salary that companies are will to pay to
get you. It is always a good idea to always have several options in case negotiation fails.
- Be good at negotiations
- Be charismatic. Be the magnetic guy that everyone like and want to be around. Sounds like something that only some have been gifted with at birth? Well, this is a learnable skill. I have just started to read a very intestesting book called The Charisma Myth that shows the readers how to improve their charisma through exercises. I'll share my toughts on it once I am done but from what I have read so far I like it very much...
Understand the following. You and the management have
different goals in mind that are in direct opposition from each other. You want to get the best possible work conditions and the manager has the responsability to maximize profits for the shareholders by minimizing the expenses.
A good manager will make sure that his staff is happy and that good employees remain in his staff for as long as possible but he will do so by paying as little as possible. You can bet your ass that he will pay
salary that are just enough to keep people in his staff and not a single penny more than what is needed. His own remuneration depends on how good he is on that.
If you want a better salary, you will at least need to ask for it but much more can be done during negotiation to get the best out of it as an employee. I'm currently writing that will have the title:
