Every month we run through a series of questions to help you run your freelance business like a bigger business—“self-coaching” your way to better results and a better life. You can view a condensed version of this month’s coaching prompts here.
As much as good marketing habits are the heart of your freelance business, you can waste a TON of time if you don’t get one other thing right...and that’s positioning.
This CMO month, we’re going to be covering positioning—how you frame your business to your market—from a few angles.
- Why it’s important
- Choosing the best market
- Talking value
- Speaking from a problem perspective
- Refining over time
# 1 Do I get why positioning matters?
For me, positioning was the difference between being able to make a livable income freelancing, and beating even my employed income while working half the time.
This meant shifting from being a “writer for hire”, to presenting myself as a highly-specialized writer who only created work in a field where it’s difficult to find experienced talent. That’s what took
me from charging commodity prices to premium rates—and I didn't change anything I was actually doing.
You’ll see something similar with luxury goods. A product might not be much different, but the sheer
act of focusing on a “select” clientele and clearly communicating that means you can charge more.
Spend this week thinking of what makes your freelance business unique (industry, results, platform,
etc.) and see if you can’t find ways to position yourself differently.
