I recently had a friend ask me what I thought about Memorial Day BBQs and Store Sales. Was that really what it was all about?
For most
people in America, Memorial Day is about Bar-B-Ques and Fireworks. Many of us are lucky to have Monday off of work and school.
But how many of us actually take the time to teach our kids about Memorial Day and the meaning behind it?
Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have
served and sacrificed for our country and our freedom.
Every Memorial Day I take time to pause and think of those who have served our country. I think of the men and women
who served any amount of time, their families, and those who have recently signed up and are about to venture off to protect our country and our freedoms.
Most importantly, I take time to think of the families and those men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
I have never met a man or woman, even those super-excited about serving our country, who has eagerly gone to war. They are aware of the risks and they train and plan for all kinds of situations but hope they will never be in them.
So, what does this have to do with BBQs and shopping?
I truly believe those brave men and women who sacrificed so much would want us to be out celebrating that very freedom they fought for.
I believe they would want us to be happy. They would want us to remember that life can take unexpected twists and turns (remember the pandemic?). We need to enjoy our lives to the fullest and be thankful for what we have - including our freedom!
