Apologies for missing last Thursday's email to you, I was frantically trying to book a flight back home to Brisbane from Thailand after my original flight got cancelled.
I'm glad to say I've done my 60-hour journey and am bunkered in at my hotel for my half-month of quarantine.
What a journey:
From a beach house to the deserted streets of Bangkok city, all the way to ghost-town Doha, then onwards to sunny Australia, where it seems people are quite oblivious to what's going on outside the country, but are, for the most part, sequestered in their homes, which is good; the social distancing while in public and at work... it seems not so much.
Ahh well, we'll see how it all goes in due time.
A quick note to say that if you're at home already, and you're wondering why people aren't back from overseas yet, it's not because they're just having a great holiday, it's because it's hard and expensive.
Flights are cancelled daily without notice. Airlines aren't giving refunds. Airlines aren't answering support lines. Airports close without notice. COUNTRIES close without notice. Most people who are now stranded are stranded because they can't afford a ticket.
For example, a normal one-way ticket to Bangkok is around $200. I just paid close to $3,000 for the same flight - after having another flight cancel a few days earlier which I also had to pay for upfront.
It's a lot harder than people realise.
So if you have friends or family that are going on about these people overseas living it up, and that they deserve to be stuck overseas because it was their choice, it's just not the case.
But, I digress...
