This week in our series on Comfortable Clothing we'll look at ease. Ease makes it possible to move (bend, reach, sit, or walk) in your clothing. Ease is the difference between the finished
measurement of the garment and the measurements of the wearer’s body. There are two kinds of ease: wearing and design ease. This week we'll look at wearing ease since design ease will be addressed in our description of comfortable styles and fabric choices.
People who sew may be more knowledgeable about ease in clothing since it is added to every garment. You can't move or breathe in garments with no ease. Ask me how I know! Although the amount of ease depends on overall body size, fabric choice, and personal taste, there are some basic
guidelines.
Basic Ease Recommendations for Women
- Bust: Add 2-4"
- Waist: Add ½-1½"
- Hips: Add 2-4"
If your clothing isn't comfortable to wear, then it may not have enough ease built into the design or for your personal taste. Sweatpants aren't the only clothes with ease.
