OGSR Library at GAC-MAC 2021
By Matt
GAC-MAC 2021 takes place November 1-5 as a hybrid conference, with a mix of in-person and virtual talks and events. The OGSR Library is offering a virtual tour of our facility, as well as helping with a virtual core
workshop by Frank Brunton and Shuo Sun.
Check out the virtual tour of the OGSR Library starting November 1st. We’ve provided a mix of 360-degree panorama photos that allow you to look around each room of the library, fun GIFs, slides, and lots of
background information. Come see what we’re all about whether you’re hearing about us for the first time or just miss us and want to see what we’ve been up to.
Join Frank Brunton and Shuo Sun on October 31st for their virtual core workshop: New Exploration Model for Silurian Lockport Group “Guelph” Carbonate Plays, SW Ontario and Great Lakes Region. The
workshop will focus on the latest findings and interpretations of Lockport group. We will be supporting the presentation with high quality core photos and videos to allow you to follow along from the comfort of your home. Cost of the workshop is $30 ($15 for students). Sign up today! For more details about what the workshop is about visit: https://gacmac2021.ca/workshops-and-short-courses/#Details4
Visit http://gacmac2021.ca to get more info and to register for the conference. You do NOT need to register for the conference to attend a workshop. Professor Roberta L. Flemming offers the following instructions for those who would like to register for a workshop without registering for the conference:
How to enroll in the Workshop:
-Go to http://gacmac2021.ca and select 'Go to registration site' and then 'Registration' and then 'Register Now'.
-Once on the registration page, you have to type your email twice and for registration type select ' In-person or on campus'. (There is no discount code).
-On the next page, fill in some information about yourself and continue
-On the next page you can choose whether you are registering for the conference and the Workshop or just the Workshop.
-If you are NOT REGISTERING for the conference DO NOT pick a membership type. (Leave that blank, as it only pertains to conference registration, not to the Workshop).
-When you get to the registration page, there are 8 workshops. Select your desired workshop.
-Next screen, answer 'Not at this time' for field trips.
-Then pick 'No lunch Today' and 'no dietary restrictions' at the lunch screen. That is for the conference, not the Workshop, but we see the screen anyway.
-Next you need to agree to Western's code of conduct, ethics, terms of reference. (Note: You need to be doubly vaccinated to attend in person workshops and the conference!)
-Then you will need to pay by Visa or Mastercard. (HST is being charged on registration.)
Geology QA/QC Knowledge Update
By Candace, Zohreh and Ramen
Since the summer, the QAQC team has worked on several geological projects which support the development of a 3-D hydrostratigraphic model for Southern
Ontario, using data managed at the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Library. These projects include: (1) A QAQC report summary on Oil, Gas and Water analytical data recorded for petroleum wells in the Ontario Petroleum data System (OPDS), the review of formation assignments for water intervals attributed to the Dundee Formation, and the documentation of potential errors for 35,000 reported water intervals encountered by petroleum wells; (2) A QAQC Onondaga Escarpment project report, which reviewed
formation tops for petroleum wells along the escarpment to improve correlation between bedrock geology and bedrock topography; (2) A review of formation assignments for water intervals associated with Lockport Group wells; (3) Core photography for 98 wells and sample chip cuttings photography for 25 wells.
The most recent project, which reviewed Lockport Group water records was designed to verify and/or update water intervals from petroleum wells intersecting
the Silurian Lockport group within interpinnacle karst and carbonate platform facies. Previously, many Lockport wells would intersect the full thickness of the Lockport Group, but formation tops in OPDS were only recorded for the Guelph Formation. Consequently, any wells having water intervals in the deeper formations
were assigned to the Guelph Formation and needed to be updated. The geology for these wells was previously reviewed, updated and presented in Appendix 4 of the 3D Geological Model of the Paleozoic Bedrock of Southern Ontario, V2. During the Lockport water intervals project a total of 713 wells including 1361 water intervals were examined by verifying and/or updating the water records to the original well file documents (Form 7 Drilling and completion records, Plugging Records, and Water
Analyses) and assigning the water interval to its corresponding Paleozoic geologic formation.

Geological Laboratory Update
By Devon
Hello, my name is Devon and I was the Geologic Lab Assistant at
the OGSR Library this summer. Over these past few months, I had a range of duties, my main tasks were core photography, chip sample photography, and sample washing. I have had a very positive experience at the OGSR Library, it is a fantastic place to learn about Ontario’s diverse geological formations, and the range of natural resources sitting within each subcrop. I had the opportunity to handle plenty of core and chip samples, as well as work with heavy equipment such as the rock saw on a
daily basis. Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in the Hydrostrat model project and talk about the Karstic geological features of Bruces’ Caves. Completing these tasks helped make me a better geologist by the end of the day.
The core library at the OGSR is an invaluable resource for all things geology in southern Ontario, whether you are into Oil and Gas, hydrology, or even doing a thesis, there is information to be gathered here. Aside from just our
physical core our online website ‘www.ogsrlibrary.com’ contains thousands of wells that you can look at from the comfort of your home.
Ever wonder what the geology right beneath you is? As someone with experience looking at wells on our website I can bet you’ll find a well pretty close to you that will provide an interesting insight as to what is directly below you.
Overall, my time here at the OGSR Library has been one I wont forget and I hope to take the skills I learned here into all my future endeavours.
GIS Data Update
By Maryrose
The OGSRL has brand new data available! We have been growing our
collection of scanned logs since operations have returned to the office. An estimated 150 new scans are currently available with hundreds more on their way within the coming weeks. I am looking forward to preparing data in this efficient and convenient format for clients to access logs remotely.
The OGSRL has an existing digital collection of 21,000 logs available for online viewing or purchase. Both personal and corporate memberships allow access to view 10 logs per month on the library website for free, which can be upgraded
to unlimited viewing for an additional $500. Non-members and members can purchase logs in TIFF format for $15 per image. Logs can also be viewed in-person at the library facilities by members for free and by non-members at our File and Research Room Use rate of $10/hr.
GIS Summer Sign Off
By Andrew
It seems like only last week I first met the team at
the library and now summer is over! Over the course of my time here I met some incredible people and was able to grow my skills to a new level. I can confidently say I’ll leave the GIS and Database Assistant position equipped with an improved set of skills and a better understanding of the industry.
Over the course of the summer, I got to take part in some really interesting and exciting projects! What began as just simple map creation and georeferencing turned into more complex work like assisting with 3D modelling work and
in-depth report writing. I was able to really show what I was capable of and grow my GIS skills while producing work I was proud of!
One of the coolest projects I got to work on was the Onondaga Escarpment project that would help with the future improvement of 3D modelling work the library was working on! This task was especially interesting because it highlighted
the potential of GIS in a 3D setting and I found the work I did to be actually impactful. I also got to create some really cool custom maps that will be included in a variety of different projects, where I was able to show case my skills and learn new ones along the way. If you’re looking for information on cavern storage in Ontario, you can check out the detailed report I put together over the summer highlighting the status is operations in the
province!
Aside from those projects, I was able to get my feet wet in the industry and learn about the incredible geology and resources Ontario has to offer while meeting some amazing people along the way! The library is like no other in the
province and I am grateful to have gained the experience I did while working here. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a job in geology or GIS or anyone looking for information on subsurface geology and its resources to check them out, you wont regret it!
IMS Summer Sign Off
By Brandon
Hello, my name is Brandon and I’m one of the summer students here at OGSR Library. I’m the Information Systems Assistant, and I’ve worked on a variety of projects throughout this
summer. Firstly, I improved the OGSRL’s online core viewer tool to make it more user-friendly for clients. Secondly, I developed an interactive virtual reality application for the Oculus Quest that allows clients to view geometry on geological (GIS) layers. Specifically, this geometry comes from geojson files and users can extrude each piece of geometry by applying scalars and offsets with a user interface in the application. Finally, I assisted with other library tasks, such as Data Entry and
SQL query debugging.

What is the OGSR Library?
The Oil, Gas & Salt Resources Library is a not-for-profit corporation that manages all of Ontario's public drilling and production data from the petroleum and solution mined salt industries. This includes processing, storing, and providing safe and convenient access to all of the industry's drill core and rock cuttings. The Library makes as much of this data as possible available through our online portal to members all over the world. The financial support of the petroleum industry and
our membership make this possible.
