Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon

Where there is sadness, joy”

I believe this prayer of St. Francis captures the spirit of this weeks study of Tapas (to heat) in the context of yoga philosophy, is a powerful way
to cultivate self-discipline, inner strength, resilience, and spiritual growth. It is a determined effort to become someone of character and strength. Here are five practical ways to incorporate Tapas into your daily life:
Establish a Consistent Daily Routine: One of the most effective ways to practice Tapas is by establishing and adhering to a consistent daily routine. This could involve setting specific times for waking up, practicing yoga or meditation, working, eating, and
sleeping. Discipline in your daily schedule helps in creating a stable foundation for both your physical and mental health, allowing you to cultivate a sense of purpose and direction.
Commit to a Regular Yoga Practice: Yoga is not just a physical exercise; it's a discipline that unites the body, mind, and spirit. By committing to a regular yoga practice, you're not only developing physical strength and flexibility but also practicing self-discipline by showing up on your mat
consistently, regardless of how you feel. This commitment reinforces Tapas and helps in cultivating a disciplined mind that can remain focused and calm in the face of life's challenges.
Practice Mindful Eating: Tapas also involves discipline in how we nourish our bodies. Practicing mindful eating by choosing foods that are healthy and good for the body, eating at regular times, and being fully present during meals can be a form of self-discipline. This practice helps in developing a
deeper connection with your body, understanding its needs, and resisting unhealthy cravings or overindulgence.
Set and Pursue Personal Goals: Setting personal goals, whether they are related to your career, personal growth, or spiritual development, is a manifestation of Tapas. The discipline comes from not only setting these goals but also from the consistent efforts and sacrifices required to achieve them. Pursuing challenging goals requires you to step out of your comfort zone,
practice persistence, and stay motivated, all of which are aspects of self-discipline.
Embrace Challenges as Opportunities for Growth: Finally, Tapas can be practiced by how we respond to life's challenges. Instead of avoiding difficulties, embrace them as opportunities for growth. This requires a disciplined mindset that is willing to endure discomfort and use it as a catalyst for personal and spiritual development. By facing challenges head-on and learning from them, you embody the
essence of Tapas, which is the fire that purifies and strengthens.
Incorporating these practices into your life can help you practice Tapas, leading to a more disciplined, focused, and fulfilling life. Remember, the journey of self-discipline is a continuous one, marked by small, daily choices that lead to big
transformations.

Thru your generous contributions - the Little Food Pantry was built in 2020 to create a 24/7 place where those in need could obtain emergency food. With the grocery store closing in
Harrisville, the pantry has been emptied on a regular basis. Please keep supporting this important food pantry in the Harrisville United Methodist Church parking lot or you can drop off non-perishable goods at the studio.
