May 2024 Newsletter
The next Niyama for the month is Svadhyaya, or self-study. It is a core concept within Yoga philosophy. It invites us to embark on a journey of introspection and personal understanding, aiming to
cultivate a deeper awareness of the self and one's relationship with the universe. This process of knowing ourselves, our projections, beliefs, and ego is a starting point.
Here are some ideas on how to practice Svadyaya.
Journaling: Start a daily journal to explore your thoughts, feelings, and reactions to your day-to-day experiences. This practice helps in recognizing patterns in your behavior and thinking, fostering a deeper understanding of yourself. Writing without judgment allows you to observe your internal landscape, encouraging self-discovery and clarity.
Reading and Reflecting on Sacred Texts or
Inspirational Literature: Engage with texts that challenge and inspire you, whether they are ancient scriptures, philosophical works, or contemporary self-help books. Reading such material can introduce new ideas, perspectives, and wisdom that provoke reflection on your own beliefs, values, and life purpose.
Meditation and Mindfulness Practices: Regular meditation or mindfulness practices are fundamental for
svadhyaya. They allow you to quiet the mind and foster an awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and sensations without attachment or judgment.
Seek Constructive Feedback: This is sometimes tough for me. Engage in conversations with trusted friends, family, or mentors who can provide honest and constructive feedback about your behavior, attitudes, and interactions. This external perspective can offer insights into aspects
of yourself that you may not be able to see. Approach these discussions with openness and the intention to learn and grow, rather than defend.
Set Aside Time for Self-reflection: Dedicate regular periods for self-reflection. Use this time to contemplate your actions, decisions, and experiences. Ask yourself questions like "What did I learn today?", "How did I contribute to my surroundings?", and "In what areas can I improve?".
This practice encourages a habitual examination of your life and choices, guiding you towards more conscious living.
By consistently engaging in self-study, you develop a profound connection with your inner self, fostering growth, wisdom, and a sense of peace.

aren’t who we thought we were begins to open up the possibility of knowing our true Self”

Thru your generous contributions - the Little Food Pantry was built in 2020 to create a 24/7 place where those in need could obtain emergency food. With the grocery store closing in
Harrisville, the pantry has been emptied on a regular basis. Please keep supporting this important food pantry in the Harrisville United Methodist Church parking lot or you can drop off non-perishable goods at the studio.
