Reminder.... The deadline for submitting 990s is the 15th of the fifth month after the close of the organization's tax year. So, if you are required to submit a Form 990 and your fiscal years run from January to December, your due date is on or before May 15, 2019.
If you are required to file a Form 990 or 990-EZ, you may want to seek professional help as the penalties for incorrect or incomplete forms can be quite steep.
However, small nonprofit organizations with an average gross income under $50,000 do not have to file one of the extensive 990 forms, but they are required to file an annual 990-N (e-Postcard)...which is pretty simple to complete.
Even though there are no penalties for submitting a Form 990-N late (there are stiff penalties for late filings of the 990 and 990EZ), you should be aware that if an organization fails to file the form three years in a row, the organization will automatically lose its tax-exempt status with the IRS.
(Note: although most churches are not required to file an annual 990, most ministries and nonprofit organizations are required to file this form.)
