This is one year I am glad to start the process of "closing out the year" and getting everything ready for the new year!
This year, most of us experienced an increase in online donations and seen a greater need for benevolence. We also are seeing several new forms for 2020 such as the new W-4 and 1099-NEC.
So, I added additional guidance to my "Year End Checklist" article to cover those areas plus much more!
For example, I seen many churches purchasing gift cards from grocery stores to hand out to individuals hit hard by the pandemic, storms, and wildfires. However, most of them did not know that it is imperative to account for and record those purchases and card disbursements to avoid any adverse tax issues! I added some instructions for that in this article PLUS linked to Lisa London's free downloadable log to track those cards with!
Read all of those extra tips and instructions plus important year end follow ups and reminders ...
I am very excited to tell you that Lisa and I revised and added to our "How to" book for churches!
We added additional and new material in areas that I seen errors happening frequently such as which payroll reporting forms NOT to include a minister's housing allowance payments and which ones to include it and where it should be reported on the form. Another "inquiry" I was contacted quite often this past year was regarding how to acknowledge and record a stock donation which we address in the the "revised" edition!
So, besides learning how to keep the books and stay out of trouble with the IRS, we added and expanded on the following:
Do I or don’t I file for a 501(c)3 determination letter?
How to keep the money safe and catch mistakes.
Acknowledge all types of donations (cash, stock, vehicles, in-kind, and more).
Properly handle a benevolence fund.
Calculate and file payroll including how to fill out the new 2020 forms
Structure pastor payroll and housing allowances
To prepare budgets
Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) is and how to file if you owe it
How to fill out the 990N and 990EZ,
And so much more.
