Disabilities and gifts?  Yes, your child is gifted!

Are you still stuck thinking of that one special present you can give your child – something that won’t break in one day, or something without a million pieces that you’ll step on?  It can be challenging coming up with unique, meaningful gifts for our kids.

I’m going to explain a terrific gift you can easily make – don’t worry it won’t be a Pinterest fail.  If you'd like to see the video of this blog post, Click here.  Would you rather hear the podcast?  Click here.

If you know me, you know I’m passionate about recognizing and celebrating our children’s gifts. Earlier this year I broadcast several videos about the concept of giftedness for children with disabilities. Hop over to my YouTube channel, click here.  There are 4 videos in the Disabilities and Gifts playlist that you can watch.

Now, let’s get back to solving the problem of an easy and very meaningful gift you can give your child.  Here are the 3 things you’ll need: A small box, wrapping paper, or a gift bag, a copy of the gift handout, Click here.

The first step is to print the gift handout.  Grab your favorite beverage and sit down in a cozy spot in your house.   In the midst of this holiday season as we buy presents for each other, let’s stop and reflect on the extraordinary gifts our children already possess.

Make a list of your child’s gifts – you might want to think of adjectives that describe your child, like: thoughtful, enthusiastic, or fun-loving.  Write these down on your gift handout.  You might also think of what you are proud of when you think of your child.  It might be his unconditional love for others, his undaunted spirit, or how he can teach others the value of belonging.   Write these down on your gift handout.  Remember, I have videos that give you more ideas on how to identify your child’s gifts.  Click here to watch those videos.

After you’ve filled the gift handout with your child’s gifts put it inside the box and wrap it up, or just slip it into a gift bag.  At the right time, give this fabulous gift to your child.  As he unwraps it and looks inside you can talk about how proud you are of the gifts he has and the wonderful things he can share with the world.

Helping your child understand his gifts and strengths will make such a huge difference in how he sees himself. Today you’ve learned how to make an awesome gift for your child that will be treasured for years to come.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, I hope it’s a magical time for you and your family.

Take care,

P.S.  You don't have to wait for a winter holiday to give this special gift to your child.  Use this as a birthday present idea, of just when your child needs a "pick me up".
