Asking the right question, in a way that is going to generate conversation is important for us to be thinking about.

I believe we all know from experience that if we aren’t mindful of what we say and how we say,

it can lead to disastrous outcomes, especially at the IEP table.

Today our communication tips are about What to Ask and How to Ask It.

Here are some questions that you can ask at the I.E.P. table or even before you go to the IEP meeting.  Remember, how you ask questions can, either start a conversation or abruptly stopped a conversation
 

We need to be conscious about checking how we sound when speaking with others - this will help us share more appropriate messages through both verbal communication as well as non-verbal cues like posture or facial expressions.

Did you know students with 504 Plans can also receive supports and services?  Yes, it's true.  This came up in our live show yesterday. 

Click here to see a document from the federal department of education about 504 Plans. Notice the language,

"The Section 504 regulations require a school district to provide a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) to each qualified student with a disability who is in the school district's jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. Under Section 504, FAPE consists of the provision of regular or special education and related aids and services designed to meet the student's individual educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are met."
