Too many students have a carrot of belonging dangled in front of them... they hear the teachers talking and deciding they aren't ready to be included...students feel the shame of only being asked to join a general education class for lunch, recess, and holiday parties... students begin to learn that they are less than... all of these ableist practices continue day in and day out.

The reality for marginalized students is that belonging has to be earned.
