Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing a podcast episode that I recorded with Mark Fisher and Michael Keeler back in Q3 of 2022:
- How We Find Work/Life Balance With Our Spouses - Some of us work with our spouse, while others work in separate operations but return home each evening to discuss the day. In either circumstance, we need to be
intentional about how and where we allow the burdens of our workload creep into our home lives. This conversation touched on how the three of us tackle this issue.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will
influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- How Herb Keller Helped This CEO Build His Company's Culture - While this quick article shares one or two useful tips for building a vibrant culture, the real value to me was the lesson in how to gather meaningful feedback from accomplished potential mentors without being disruptive of their time and personal space.
- Why Quitting Can be the Best Career Move You Can Make - I've seen two full-time employees walk away from coaching roles with us here at CSP for wholesale career changes during the past calendar year. In
both circumstances, from what I can tell, their move has resulted in a dramatic improvement in some or all of the categories shared in this artlcle.
- Conspicuous (Non) Consumption - This message from Seth
Godin spoke to me, as it directly related to the way we go about equipping and running our training business. Could we design and roll out a fancy app that would showcase our resources on the training floor? Sure. Does it make sense when we are more interested in minimizing distractions associated with phones and tablets for already distracted youth athletes? Probably not. We'll stick with the clipboards and printed programs, thank you very much.
- Why Are There So Many Bad Bosses? (podcast) - Are you considering promoting your best coach into a managerial role? Maybe make them some sort of Director that oversees the performance of the rest of the team? This episode of Freakonomics Radio will
push you to think long and hard before doing so.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
