Sarana and the Dark King by Ivy Keating

The fearsome Dark King of Bounten, with a magical creature known as a Valomere by his side, is on a quest to find the rare metal tarilium. His brutal ways incite the powerful psychic Allani. But when news of his plans to invade the kingdom of Attaveer spread, a new opponent emerges—Sarana, the daughter of a farmer…or is she?

At birth, Sarana was sentenced to death for her “cursed” white hair. The delivery nurse, Meriden, whisked the fair-haired babe to a loving home across the waters from Bounten. Her entire life she hid her appearance to avoid prejudice. Things changed when she discovered she too had a Valomere. She strived to learn the creature’s magic and master fighting skills with the hope of becoming a warrior. Her dreams came true when she was allowed to join the Attaveerian king’s network of spies–a group poised to help defend the kingdom from an invasion by the Dark King and his powerful army.

When word of the white-haired messenger reached the Dark King he vowed to stop at nothing to capture or kill his opponent.

The time for hiding is over.

Can Sarana save herself and her kingdom? Follow Sarana from death to destiny as she joins forces with psychics, Valomeres, and the power of inner strength, to defeat an evil king.

Targeted Age Group:: 18+

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Nature inspires me to write. The beauty of our natural resources ignites my imagination and makes me wonder. Sarana and the Dark King, was imagined from a mental picture of the Great Lakes. The proximity of these bodies of water and the land that surrounds them conjure the images of separate kingdoms—at least they do in my mind. My favorite theme is man vs nature.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
When I write I have a general idea of what I want my characters to be like. I have a master's degree in social work and my background helps me develop the players. At a certain point in the writing the characters are established to the point where they can tell me what they will do and how they will react.

In ancient times, a powerful sorcerer, played a trick on the rulers by creating maps with the location of tarilium, the strongest metal in existence. Kingdoms waged wars to possess these charts but only two ever led to the rare metal, and only enough to forge modest supplies of weapons before the mines ran dry.
When all known maps had been explored, the Tropian king, who possessed one of these tarilium mines, attempted to make peace with the surrounding kingdoms. He drafted a treaty declaring the sovereignty of each empires resources, and to show his commitment he gave each monarch a knife with a tarilium blade. The rulers signed the agreement and lived in harmony.
As for the sorcerer, the scoundrel wandered into a Northland forest where a pack of wolves cornered and ate him. The sorcerer’s blood ingested by the wolves caused a new creature to emerge; a mysterious animal called a Valomere. These rare beasts commanded their own pack of wolves and possessed magical powers. Each special creature would form a bond with one human and obey them alone.
In time, a ruthless king from the empire of Bounten controlled a Valomere with the magic to cause instant death. To further his wealth and power he broke with the treaty and embarked on a quest to find tarilium. He ravaged his own villages and prepared his forces to invade the other kingdoms.
Only one thing could stop his reign of terror—a commoner with a secret past and a powerful Valomere of her own.
